Fin rot is a bacterial disease affecting freshwater fish, including pike. It causes progressive degradation of fin tissue, which becomes ragged and then dies back from the edges. The condition is common in farmed fish, pond fish, and aquarium fish when water quality declines. In wild pike, it typically appears following stress, injury, or high stocking density, such as in fish farms or restocking facilities.

The fins, especially the tail and pectoral fins, appear ragged, discolored, or whitish at the edges. As the disease progresses, the tissue shrinks and the bony fin rays may become exposed. A reddish inflammation is sometimes visible at the base of the affected fin. The fish becomes lethargic, stays isolated, swims less actively, and may lose appetite. In advanced cases, skin ulcers can appear elsewhere on the body if the infection spreads.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by opportunistic bacteria, most commonly Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, or Flavobacterium species, which are naturally present in water. These bacteria take advantage of an existing fin injury (trauma, bite, handling) or a weakened immune system to establish themselves and destroy the tissue.
Poor water quality—elevated ammonia and nitrite levels, or organic overload—is the primary risk factor. Overstocking in ponds or fish farms, stress from transport or handling, injuries from territorial fights or sharp décor, and unsuitable water temperature or sudden fluctuations weaken pike and promote infection.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through water contaminated by opportunistic bacteria, favored by contact between fish in an environment where water quality is poor.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis relies on clinical observation of the fins by a fish veterinarian or experienced fish farmer. A tissue sample from the affected area may be sent to a laboratory to identify the causative bacterium and guide treatment. Water quality assessment is part of the complete evaluation, as it helps identify the underlying cause.
Treatment
Treatment involves immediate improvement of water quality, combined if necessary with topical or water-based antibacterial therapy prescribed by a veterinarian according to the bacterium identified. A mild antiseptic bath may be used to limit bacterial growth during healing.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Maintaining good water quality is essential: effective filtration, regular water changes, and monitoring of physical and chemical parameters. Avoid overstocking in ponds or fish farms, minimize stressful handling, and remove any décor that could injure fish. Promptly isolating an injured or stressed fish prevents infection from taking hold.
Possible complications
Without prompt treatment, infection can progress to the base of the fin and destroy supporting tissue, preventing normal regrowth. It may also spread systemically as septicemia if bacteria enter the bloodstream, which can be life-threatening.

Prognosis
