Fin rot is a common infection in clownfish and many aquarium fish. It causes progressive deterioration of the fin edges, which become frayed and gradually disappear. This condition is almost always linked to poor water quality or significant stress on the fish, both of which weaken its natural defenses. It affects both captive-bred clownfish and those recently introduced to an aquarium.

The main sign is a fin edge that becomes frayed, whitish or blackish, then gradually disintegrates. The fin rays can become bare and appear broken. The affected area may redden or show an irregular border before tissue death occurs. The fish may swim less smoothly, rub against rocks or sand, and become quieter or less active than usual. In advanced cases, loss of appetite and the clownfish withdrawing into a corner of the tank or into its anemone may appear.

Causes and risk factors

Fin rot is most often caused by opportunistic bacteria (notably bacteria of the Vibrio or Pseudomonas genus) already present in the water. These bacteria exploit a weakening of the fish or a fin injury to develop. Secondary infection by fungi or parasites can sometimes establish itself on tissue that is already damaged.

Poor water quality (excess ammonia, nitrites or nitrates, lack of regular water changes) is the main risk factor. A recently set up aquarium without sufficient maturation of the biological filtration system also increases risk. Stress plays an important role: transport, aquarium change, aggressive cohabitation with other fish, or lack of appropriate hiding places. A pre-existing fin injury (fighting, contact with a sharp object in the décor) facilitates infection. Water temperature that is unstable or unsuitable for the species also weakens the clownfish.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

In some cases, temporarily isolating the clownfish in a treatment tank allows better control of the treatment and prevents contamination of other aquarium inhabitants.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Maintaining good water quality is the most important preventive measure: regular water changes, appropriate filtration, and monitoring of parameters (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates).

It is recommended to allow the tank to stabilize (nitrogen cycle) before introducing fish.

Avoiding overstocking and stress from aggressive tank mates also helps reduce risk.

Quarantining new fish before adding them to the main aquarium makes it possible to detect disease before it spreads.

Finally, avoiding any décor or equipment that could damage the fins is a useful precaution.

Possible complications

If the infection is not treated, it can progress to the base of the fin and even reach the fish's body.

This can lead to a more widespread infection, loss of mobility, and in severe cases, death.

A severely damaged fin may not regrow completely normally even after recovery.

Fin appearing to shorten or disintegrate over several days.

Fish becoming unusually inactive, hiding, or refusing to eat.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good if the disease is detected early and water quality is quickly corrected.

The fin can regrow partially or completely depending on the severity of initial damage.

However, if the infection progresses to the fish's body, the prognosis becomes more guarded.

Is fin rot contagious to other fish in the aquarium?

It is not directly contagious like a viral disease, but if water quality is poor, other fish in the same tank may develop the same illness for the same reasons.

Can the clownfish's fin fully regenerate?

Yes, in many cases, once the cause is corrected, the fin gradually regrows, although the appearance may remain slightly different depending on the initial severity.

Should you isolate a sick clownfish from the other inhabitants of the tank?
