Early signs appear at the fin edges, which become frayed, whitish, or reddish. Over time, the fin gradually shortens, as if nibbled away. Areas of damaged tissue may be visible, sometimes with a slight white deposit or inflammation at the fin base. The fish may swim abnormally, rub against tank walls or the bottom, and show reduced appetite. In advanced cases, necrosis can reach the fin base and expose the bony rays, which favors secondary infections.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is most often caused by opportunistic bacteria, particularly species of the genus Vibrio or Pseudomonas, sometimes associated with Flexibacter or Aeromonas. These bacteria are normally present in the farming environment but take advantage of weakened fish or poor water quality to develop on the fragile fin tissues.

Poor water quality—excess organic matter, high ammonia, insufficient oxygen—is the main risk factor. Excessive stocking density also promotes injuries from contact between fish and stress, which weakens natural defenses. Mechanical injuries during handling, sorting, or transport can create entry points for bacteria. Water that is too warm or sudden temperature fluctuations also play a contributory role.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian or aquaculture specialist examines the appearance of the fins and the general condition of the fish group. Possible complications

If the condition goes untreated, necrosis may progress towards the base of the fin and expose deeper tissues, creating an opening for more severe secondary infections, even generalised septicaemia. Weakened fish also become more susceptible to other infectious or parasitic diseases.
