Ringworm is an infection of the skin, fur, and sometimes the claws, caused by microscopic fungi called dermatophytes. In pet mice, it typically affects the head, ears, and tail. It is a well-known disease in mice kept in groups, particularly in pet stores or breeding facilities.

This fungus feeds on keratin, the substance that makes up hair, the outer layer of skin, and claws. It can remain undetected for a long time in carrier mice without any symptoms, which makes detection difficult.

The most common signs are well-defined hairless patches, often round or oval in shape, located around the ears, muzzle, or tail base.

The skin in these areas may become red, thickened, crusty, or scaly. Itching is possible but not always present: some mice do not scratch at all.

In breeding facilities, many animals can be carriers without ever showing visible lesions, particularly healthy adults. Young mice, stressed animals, or weakened individuals are more likely to develop visible symptoms.

Causes and risk factors

Ringworm in mice is most often caused by the fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes, sometimes by Microsporum species. These fungi live in the outer layer of skin and in the hair.

Transmission occurs through direct contact with an infected or carrier animal, or indirectly through contaminated items: bedding, cage, nest, handling equipment, or the breeder's hands.

Overcrowding in breeding facilities or pet shops greatly increases the risk of spread. Young age, stress, unbalanced diet, weakened immunity, or concurrent disease make infection more apparent and more severe.

Damp environments, infrequently changed bedding, and poor hygiene promote fungal survival and transmission between animals.

Transmission

Transmission occurs through direct contact with an infected or asymptomatic carrier animal, or indirectly through contaminated bedding, cage, equipment, or hands. Fungal spores can survive for long periods in the environment, which promotes the persistence of the disease in a breeding facility.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian examines the skin lesions and may perform an examination under ultraviolet light (Wood's lamp), although this test does not detect all fungal species responsible.

Definitive diagnosis depends on a sample of hair and scales sent to the laboratory for fungal culture or direct microscopic analysis.

Treatment

Treatment involves antifungal medication applied locally to the lesions, and sometimes oral antifungal medication in extensive cases, always on veterinary prescription.

Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the environment (cage, bedding, accessories) are essential alongside treatment, as spores persist in the surroundings.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention relies on good habitat hygiene: regular cage cleaning, frequent bedding changes, and disinfection of equipment.

It is recommended to quarantine any new animal before introducing it to a group, and to avoid overcrowding in cages.

Washing hands after handling mice, especially if there is any concern about an animal's health, reduces the risk of transmission to humans and between cages.

Possible complications

An untreated infection may spread to other body areas or to other animals in the group. Repeated scratching can cause secondary wounds that become infected by bacteria.

In an already weakened animal, ringworm can contribute to overall decline in health and delay recovery from other health problems.

Transmission to humans

Ringworm is transmissible to humans through direct contact with an infected or carrier animal, or via a contaminated environment. In humans, it causes red, rounded patches often with scaling on the skin, sometimes accompanied by itching.

Children, immunocompromised individuals, and those with damaged skin are at higher risk. If a suspicious skin lesion develops after contact with a mouse, consultation with a doctor is recommended.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good in an otherwise healthy mouse, with complete recovery following antifungal treatment and environmental disinfection.

Recovery may be slower in young, elderly, or immunocompromised animals, and relapse is possible if the environment is not properly disinfected.
