This disease often progresses very quickly and can lead to death within a few days, especially in young gerbils or weakened animals. It remains rare but must be known to owners because it can affect an entire flock in a short time.

The signs are often brutal. The gerbil becomes despondent, refuses to eat and loses weight quickly. \n\nDiarrhea, sometimes watery, may appear. The belly may feel swollen or tender to the touch. \n\nIn some cases, the skin or mucous membranes take on a yellowish tint (jaundice), a sign of liver damage. \n\nThe animal can become dehydrated very quickly and remain lying down without strength. \n\nSome gerbils die suddenly, without having shown clearly identified symptoms before.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by Clostridium piliforme, a bacteria that forms very resistant spores in the environment. These spores contaminate bedding, food or water soiled by infected stools. The bacteria enters through the mouth, then reaches the intestine, liver and sometimes the heart.
Stress is a major triggering factor: transport, change of environment, overcrowding in the cage, unsuitable temperatures. \n\nYoung animals, recently weaned gerbils and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk. \n\nA dirty, humid environment or insufficient cage hygiene favor the survival and transmission of spores. \n\nIntroducing a new animal without an observation period can also introduce the bacteria into a healthy group.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on symptoms and history (stress, contact with a sick animal). Definitive diagnosis is difficult in living animals; it often relies on laboratory analyses, or even a post-mortem examination in the event of death, to look for the bacteria in the liver or intestine.
Treatment
Treatment, when attempted, combines appropriate antibiotic therapy, rehydration and nutritional support. Speed of treatment is essential, but the prognosis often remains guarded given the speed of progression of the disease.
