The horsefly (family Tabanidae, genus Tabanus in particular) is a large biting insect very common in Tunisia during the warm months. Its bite is painful because it cuts the skin to draw blood, unlike the mosquito which bites more discreetly.
Beyond the immediate discomfort, the horsefly can mechanically carry pathogens from one animal to another by transferring contaminated blood on its mouthparts during successive bites. It is not a biological vector like the tick, but a mechanical vector: the pathogen does not multiply within it, it is simply transported.

The horsefly bite causes an immediate local reaction: sharp pain, slight bleeding, and red, warm swelling around the bite site. A wider allergic reaction (swelling, plaques) is possible in sensitive animals.

The bite itself is caused by the cutting mouthparts of the female horsefly, which lacerate the skin to make blood ooze so she can draw it. Only females bite; males feed on nectar.

Horseflies are associated with possible mechanical transmission of certain agents responsible for infectious anemias, blood bacteria, or viruses depending on the geographic areas and animal species involved.
Animals living outdoors, grazing, or near stagnant water and wetland areas face the greatest risk, because tabanid larvae develop in wet soil.
The warm season, from late spring through autumn in Tunisia, marks peak tabanid activity. Large herbivores—horses, cattle, and camels—are particularly targeted because of their size and body odor.
Large herds, extensive grazing operations, and lack of shade increase the number of bites each animal receives.
Transmission
Mechanical transmission: the horsefly bites an infected animal, retains contaminated blood on its mouthparts, then bites another animal shortly after, transferring the pathogen. There is no multiplication of the germ within the insect, unlike biological vectors such as ticks or mosquitoes for certain diseases.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Your veterinarian will examine the skin lesions and ask about your animal's recent exposure to tabanids and their habitat. If a transmitted disease is suspected, blood samples are taken to identify the pathogenic agent.
A complete physical examination helps assess the animal's general condition, presence of fever, pale mucous membranes, or weight loss—signs that suggest a deeper problem than a simple bite.
Treatment
Treatment for a simple bite is local and supportive: wound cleaning, soothing or anti-inflammatory products if needed, on veterinary advice.
If a tabanid-transmitted disease is confirmed, treatment depends on the agent identified and may include antibiotics, antiparasitic drugs, or supportive care as appropriate. No specific treatment targets the tabanid bite itself.

Prevention
Prevention focuses on reducing contact between animals and tabanids rather than treating the bite after it occurs.
You can limit access to wet and marshy areas during peak tabanid activity (midday), provide shaded shelters, and use repellents or insecticides suitable for your animals on veterinary advice.
Tabanid traps exist to reduce the local population around grazing areas. Preventing stagnant water from accumulating around your property also limits larval breeding sites.
Possible complications
A single bite usually heals without complications. Complications are possible with multiple, repeated bites: anemia in young or weakened animals, secondary wound infection from scratching or rubbing, marked allergic reaction.
The most serious complication remains transmission of a blood-borne pathogen that can cause systemic disease, sometimes severe, particularly in horses and cattle.

The animal has a bite wound that becomes infected, swells, or fails to heal.
General signs appear after tabanid exposure: fever, lethargy, loss of appetite.

Transmission to humans
Horseflies can bite humans in the same way they bite animals, causing a painful local reaction. Mechanical transmission of certain animal pathogens to humans through a horsefly bite remains rare but has been documented for a few pathogens in certain regions of the world; it is not a major transmission route compared to direct contact with a sick animal.
Prognosis
The outlook for a simple bite is excellent, with healing occurring within a few days. The outlook in cases of pathogen transmission depends entirely on the disease transmitted, how early it is detected, and the treatment provided; it can range from mild to guarded for certain chronic blood conditions.
