What is it?

“Roundworms” include several species of intestinal nematodes that parasitize the Tibetan fox, a wild canid living on the highlands of Central Asia.\n\nThe most common species belong to the families of roundworms (such as Toxascaris) and hookworms. These parasites live in the intestine of the animal and feed on its digestive contents or blood, depending on the species.\n\nThis parasitosis is very widespread among wild canids in general, and the Tibetan fox, although quite discreet and solitary, is not immune, especially when it shares its territory with other canids (domestic dogs, wolves) which can serve as a reservoir.

In healthy adult animals, the infestation often remains discreet, or even completely silent.\n\nYoung foxes and weakened animals may present with a swollen belly, diarrhea sometimes tinged with blood, occasional vomiting and a dull, dull coat.\n\nProgressive weight loss and growth retardation in fox cubs are classic signs of a heavy parasitic load.\n\nIn the stools or vomit, worms can sometimes be directly observed whitish, thin and elongated.

Causes and risk factors

Infestation occurs mainly through ingestion of worm eggs present in the environment, on contaminated prey or in the feces of other canids.\n\nCertain species of nematodes can also penetrate directly through the skin when the animal is in contact with contaminated soil.\n\nTransmission from the mother to the fox cub can also occur before birth or through milk during breastfeeding, which explains the particular sensitivity of the young.

Young age is a major risk factor, with fox cubs being much more susceptible than adults.\n\nA high population density, a territory shared with stray dogs or other wild canids, as well as an environment soiled by old feces increase the risk of infestation.\n\nAn animal already weakened by another disease, malnutrition or the stress linked to captivity (zoological parks, rescue centers) often presents a greater parasitic load.

Transmission

Transmission occurs by ingestion of eggs present in the environment or on prey, by skin contact with contaminated soil, or from the mother to the young during gestation and breastfeeding.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian makes the diagnosis mainly through a parasitological examination of the stools (coproscopy), which makes it possible to identify the worm eggs under a microscope.\n\nIn certain cases, particularly in captivity, a blood test may also be requested to assess the general impact of the infestation, such as possible anemia.

Treatment

Treatment is based on the administration of dewormers belonging to the family of broad-spectrum antiparasitics, adapted to the species of worm identified.\n\nNutritional support is often associated in young or weakened animals in order to compensate for digestive losses.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Environmental management is essential: regular collection of stools and cleaning of enclosures or living areas in captivity.\n\nRegular parasite monitoring with examination of stools makes it possible to detect an infestation before the appearance of symptoms.\n\nLimiting contact with stray dogs or other potentially carrier canids also reduces the risk of transmission in wild or semi-free populations.

Possible complications

In young or immunocompromised animals, a massive infestation can lead to anemia, severe dehydration and lasting developmental delay.\n\nIn rare cases of very significant infestation, intestinal obstruction due to accumulation of worms is possible, particularly in fox kits.
