Vibriosis is a common bacterial disease in farmed and wild shrimp. It is caused by bacteria of the Vibrio genus, naturally present in seawater and farming ponds. These bacteria become pathogenic especially when the shrimp is weakened or stressed. The disease affects both larvae and adult shrimp, sometimes with serious consequences for farms (aquaculture).

Diseased shrimp become lethargic, swim less, and sometimes gather at the bottom or near the surface. They lose their appetite and their growth slows down.
Dark or reddish spots and areas are often seen on the shell, as well as lesions or erosions, particularly on the appendages (legs, antennae) and tail.
In the most severe forms, sometimes called "luminous bacteria disease" (Vibrio luminescens), the shrimp or the pond water may emit a faint light visible at night.
In farms, a progressive rise in mortality is noted, sometimes sudden, affecting mainly the more fragile larvae and post-larvae.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by bacteria of the Vibrio genus (notably Vibrio harveyi, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio alginolyticus and other related species). These bacteria are normally present in the marine environment and become opportunistic—that is, they take advantage of a weakened shrimp to multiply and cause infection.
Stress is the main triggering factor: poor water quality, high stocking density, abrupt changes in temperature or salinity, or low dissolved oxygen.
Inappropriate or low-quality feed, along with the buildup of organic matter in the ponds, also promotes vibrio proliferation.
Larvae and post-larvae are particularly vulnerable, as are shrimp that have recently molted or suffered injury.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through contaminated water, by direct contact between shrimp, or by ingestion of contaminated organic matter or prey. Since Vibrio bacteria are naturally present in the marine environment, external contamination is not always necessary to trigger the disease.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on observation of clinical signs (lesions, mortality, abnormal behavior) combined with laboratory analysis: bacterial sampling and culture from the hemolymph or affected tissues, allowing identification of the Vibrio species responsible.
A veterinarian specializing in aquaculture or a veterinary diagnostic laboratory can confirm the diagnosis and guide management of the pond.
Treatment
Management focuses mainly on correcting the rearing conditions (water quality, stocking density, feed) to reduce stress in the shrimp.
Antibacterial treatments may be considered in certain cases under professional supervision, but their use is regulated as it promotes the emergence of bacterial resistance.
Probiotics and certain immunostimulant products are also used to strengthen the shrimp's natural defenses and limit vibrio proliferation.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies mainly on good husbandry practices: maintaining high-quality water (sufficient oxygen, stable temperature and salinity), reasonable stocking density, and regular pond cleaning to limit organic matter accumulation.
The use of probiotics in the water or feed can help limit the development of pathogenic vibrios by promoting a balanced bacterial flora.
Disinfection of ponds and equipment between production cycles, as well as quarantine of new batches of larvae, reduce the risk of disease introduction.
Possible complications
Without proper management, vibriosis can lead to significant mortality in ponds, particularly among larvae and post-larvae.
Secondary infections or cascade mortality events may occur if rearing conditions are not corrected quickly.

Unusual or increasing shrimp deaths in the pond.
Appearance of lesions, dark spots, or erosions on the shrimp shell.
Abnormal behaviour: lethargy, loss of appetite, abnormal swimming.

Prognosis
The prognosis depends on how quickly the disease is detected and on correcting stress factors. Early action on water quality and pond management often limits losses. Without corrective measures, however, mortality events can become severe, particularly in younger shrimp.
Frequently asked questions
Is vibriosis dangerous for humans?
Vibrio bacteria responsible for vibriosis in shrimp are generally not the same species as those that can cause infections in humans through seafood consumption. The direct risk is low, but it is nonetheless important to always follow good food hygiene practices.
Can vibriosis be treated with antibiotics?
Antibacterial treatments exist, but their use must remain supervised by a professional, as excessive use promotes the emergence of resistant bacteria, a major problem in aquaculture.
How can I tell if my pelvis is at risk?
Poor water quality, excessive shrimp density, or sudden changes in temperature and salinity increase the risk. Regular monitoring of water parameters is recommended.
Can vibriosis reappear after a treated episode?
