Vibriosis is a bacterial infection affecting many marine crustaceans, including the Japanese spider crab (Macrocheira kaempferi), the largest known crab species. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, naturally present in seawater. These germs become problematic especially when the animal is weakened, for example in captivity, in an aquarium, or during transport. The disease can affect the shell, gills, or the animal's entire body.

The disease is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio (for example Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, or related species) that live naturally in seawater. These bacteria become pathogenic when the balance between the animal and its environment is disrupted: poor water quality, stress, shell injury, or an immune system weakened by other factors.
The main risk factors are poor water quality (high levels of organic matter, inadequate filtration), unsuitable temperature or salinity, overstocking in the tank, stress from transport or handling, and any shell damage that creates a route of entry for bacteria. Recently collected animals and those in the process of molting are particularly vulnerable, as their shell is more fragile at this time.

Transmission occurs mainly through contaminated water containing Vibrio bacteria, which enter the crab's body through a shell wound, the gills, or through the digestive tract.
