Vibrio infection is a bacterial disease caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, which occur naturally in seawater and coastal environments.

The coconut crab, also known as the robber crab, is a large terrestrial crustacean found in tropical regions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It remains dependent on the marine environment for reproduction and its early life stages, which exposes it to these bacteria.

This disease mainly affects weakened or injured animals, or those kept in poor conditions such as captivity or in farming situations. The infection can progress rapidly to a generalised infection if not treated.

Causes and risk factors

Vibrio infection is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, particularly species such as Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus or Vibrio harveyi, commonly found in seawater, damp sand and coastal organic debris.

These bacteria typically gain entry through a wound in the carapace, a recent moult (when the new shell is still soft and fragile), or a general weakening of the animal.

Several factors increase the risk of vibrio infection in coconut crabs:

- a wound or injury to the carapace, for example following a fall, a fight with another crab, or rough handling;

- a recent moult, a period of high vulnerability as the carapace has not yet hardened;

- poor quality water or substrate, particularly in captivity (poorly maintained tank or terrarium);

- significant stress from transport, prolonged captivity or unsuitable cohabitation;

- inappropriate water temperature or salinity during larval stages in the sea;

- an immune system weakened by another disease or by old age.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly through contact with contaminated seawater or substrate, or through penetration of bacteria via a wound or a carapace that has been weakened after moulting.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis is based on observation of clinical signs (lesions, swelling, lethargy) combined, where possible, with samples analysed by a laboratory specialising in invertebrate or crustacean pathology.

A veterinarian specialising in exotic animals or an aquaculture pathology specialist can perform a bacterial culture from the haemolymph or a lesion to confirm the presence of Vibrio and guide treatment.

Treatment

Management focuses on immediately improving the animal's living conditions (cleanliness, stress reduction, isolation) and on local wound care.

In some cases, antibiotic treatment suited to crustaceans may be considered by a professional, taking into account the difficulty of administration in these animals and the risk of disrupting their natural bacterial flora.

No treatment should be started without specialist advice, as many common antibiotics are poorly tolerated or ineffective in invertebrates.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention mainly relies on good housing conditions and careful handling:

- keep the substrate and, where applicable, the water clean, with regular maintenance;

- avoid injuries by handling the animal carefully and keeping abrasive surfaces and sharp objects out of the enclosure;

- limit stress (transport, cohabitation, noise, excessive handling);

- monitor animals closely during and shortly after moulting, a period of higher risk;

- isolate any animal with a wound or sign of weakness, to prevent cross-contamination and allow close observation;

- provide varied, appropriate food to support the animal's natural defences.

Possible complications

Untreated vibriosis may progress to generalised septicaemia—an infection spreading throughout the body via the haemolymph—which can lead to the animal's death.

Severe carapace lesions can also promote secondary infections by other microorganisms and complicate future moults.

When to see a veterinarian

The crab shows dark, weeping or necrotic areas on the shell or legs.

The animal remains unusually immobile or has refused food for several days.

Unusual swelling appears on a joint or part of the body.

The animal loses a leg or claw with no apparent cause.

A captive animal shows these signs shortly after a moult or a known injury.

Prognosis

The prognosis depends on the stage of disease when treatment is started. A localized infection detected early and accompanied by improvement in living conditions has better chances of a favorable outcome.

A generalized infection (septicemia) carries a much more guarded prognosis, with significant mortality risk, particularly in captive animals that are already weakened.

Frequently asked questions

Can vibriosis in coconut crabs be transmitted to humans?

Vibrio bacteria involved also exist in the marine environment and may, in other contexts, affect humans, but direct transmission from a sick crab is not a documented usual mode of contamination. It remains prudent to wash your hands after handling any sick animal or its lesions.

Can you treat a coconut crab yourself with antibiotics?

No. The administration of antibiotics in crustaceans must be overseen by a professional, as many products are ineffective or harmful, and incorrect dosing can worsen the animal's condition.

How can you tell if your coconut crab is simply molting or if it's actually sick?

Molting is accompanied by normal, temporary reduced activity, without oozing lesions or abnormal swelling. If in doubt, especially if the animal remains lethargic well after molting, professional advice is recommended.

Is vibriosis common in wild coconut crabs?

It mainly affects weakened or injured animals, or those kept in captivity under poor conditions; in healthy wild populations, it generally remains uncommon.
