Presentation
The dragonfly is a flying insect belonging to the order Odonata, recognizable by its elongated body and two pairs of membranous wings. An agile predator, it hunts other small insects in flight, such as mosquitoes. Its life cycle includes a long aquatic larval phase followed by a shorter aerial adult life. It is found near freshwater sources, where it reproduces and hunts. Its presence is often considered an indicator of good water quality.
The dragonfly's body is divided into three parts: head, thorax, and an elongated abdomen, often colored in vivid hues. Its large compound eyes provide it with nearly panoramic vision, essential for spotting prey in flight. The two pairs of wings, independent of each other, enable it to perform precise aerial maneuvers, including hovering and backward flight.

Habitat and distribution
Dragonflies inhabit freshwater environments such as ponds, marshes, rivers, and wetlands, which are essential for reproduction and larval development. CURRENT RANGE
Dragonflies are found on all continents except Antarctica, in both temperate and tropical zones. They are particularly diverse in warm, humid regions. In North Africa, including Tunisia, several species occupy wetlands and waterways.
Behaviour
The dragonfly is a territorial insect, particularly the males, which actively defend an area around a water source. Its flight is extremely fast and precise, allowing it to make sharp directional changes. It is primarily active during the day, especially during warm and sunny hours.
Reproduction
Mating occurs in flight or at rest, in a characteristic heart-shaped position. The female then lays her eggs in water or on aquatic plants. The larva that emerges lives underwater for several months or even several years depending on the species, before undergoing incomplete metamorphosis to become a winged adult.
Peculiarities
The dragonfly possesses one of the most powerful vision systems in the insect world, thanks to compound eyes that can contain up to 30,000 facets. It is also one of the fastest and most agile flying insects, capable of flying in all directions. Its heart-shaped reproductive position is unique among insects.
Threats and conservation
Degradation and pollution of wetlands are the primary threat to dragonfly populations, reducing available breeding sites. Pesticide use also affects their prey and therefore their food sources. Climate change is furthermore altering the distribution of certain species.
