The leaf beetle is a small beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae, which includes several thousand species found worldwide. Its oval, convex body, often displaying vibrant metallic colors (green, blue, gold, or red), earned it the name 'golden leaf beetle' in some regions. These insects are plant-eaters and feed mainly on foliage, which sometimes makes them feared crop pests. The most well-known is the Colorado potato beetle, famous for its attacks on potato plants. Size typically ranges from a few millimeters to about 1.5 cm depending on the species. They are found in gardens, fields, and natural wooded areas alike.

The body is short, convex, and often glossy, with colored wing cases that may display striped or spotted patterns. The antennae are short and thread-like, and the legs are adapted for walking on foliage. The bright coloration of many species likely serves as a warning signal to predators, with some producing unpleasant chemical substances.

Habitat and distribution

Leaf beetles inhabit environments where their host plants grow: gardens, cultivated fields, meadows, and forest edges. Some species are associated with wetland areas where aquatic or semi-aquatic plants thrive.

Behaviour

These insects are active during the day and not easily startled, moving slowly across the plants they feed on. When threatened, some species drop to the ground or fold their legs to play dead. They can form dense populations during outbreaks, particularly on vegetable crops.

Reproduction

The female lays her eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves of the host plant. The larvae undergo several stages before pupating in the soil or on the plant itself. The complete cycle, from egg to adult, can take place over several weeks depending on temperature and species.

Peculiarities

Some leaf beetles have structural metallic colours, produced by the structure of their shell rather than by pigments. Other species secrete toxic or repellent substances to defend themselves against predators.

Threats and conservation

Most leaf beetle species are not threatened, with some even considered agricultural pests. Intensive pesticide use in cultivated areas can nonetheless affect certain local populations and associated biodiversity.
