Animals in the Trial of Ayyûb

Tested by a long trial, the prophet Ayyûb (Job) showed exemplary patience. His story, discreet yet rich in lessons, also reminds us of the place of the smallest creatures in divine mercy.

The prophet Ayyûb (Job), peace be upon him, was tested for many years by illness and loss of his wealth. The Qur'an presents him as a model of patience and trust in God, and his name is mentioned several times, notably in Surah Sad and Surah Al-Anbiya. After this trial, Allah restored his health and his possessions, and it was in this moment of deliverance that a touching detail occurred in which the small creatures of the earth played a role.

Healing and the Promise Kept

It is reported, according to certain scholars of interpretation, that at the height of his suffering, Ayyûb had sworn to punish his wife if he recovered his health, for she had once angered him despite her constant devotion to him throughout these difficult years. When Allah healed him, He showed him a merciful solution to keep his oath without harming the one who had cared for him so faithfully. This passage is mentioned in Surah Sad:

﴿ وَخُذْ بِيَدِكَ ضِغْثًا فَاضْرِب بِّهِ وَلَا تَحْنَثْ ۗ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَاهُ صَابِرًا ۚ نِّعْمَ الْعَبْدُ ۖ إِنَّهُ أَوَّابٌ ﴾

"Take in your hand a bundle of branches, and strike with it, and do not break your oath." We found him patient. What an excellent servant! Indeed, he was ever-turning back to Us.

(Surah Sad, verse 44)

Thus, Ayyûb took a bundle of branches and gave a single light strike, which allowed him to remain true to his word while showing gentleness. This passage, although not directly featuring an animal, is part of a narrative in which the earth, the plants, and the creatures that populate the world bear witness to divine mercy toward the one who endured the trial with patience.

The Earth and Its Creatures, Witnesses to Patience

Commentators report that Ayyûb's healing was accompanied by a particular sign concerning the surrounding nature. It is reported, according to certain scholars of interpretation, that Allah caused a spring of water to gush forth for him to wash and drink, as mentioned in Surah Sad:

﴿ ارْكُضْ بِرِجْلِكَ ۖ هَٰذَا مُغْتَسَلٌ بَارِدٌ وَشَرَابٌ ﴾

"Strike the ground with your foot: here is cool water for washing and for drinking."

(Surah Sad, verse 42)

This water, intended for both humans and creatures living nearby, illustrates how mercy granted to a prophet extends to his entire surroundings. The oases, springs, and fertile lands that accompany prophetic accounts are often the places where animals find shelter and sustenance, reminding us that all of creation is bound together in trial as in grace.

A Lesson in Patience and Gentleness

The story of Ayyûb teaches above all patience in the face of trial and faithfulness to one's word, but it also teaches, through the gesture of the branches, that there is always a way to act with justice without excess or harshness. This lesson applies to how we treat all forms of life, including the humblest creatures around us.

In reflecting on Ayyûb's trial, we learn that gentleness must always come first, even toward the most vulnerable beings. Whether it is a domestic animal, a bird in the garden, or an insect encountered on our path, this teaching invites us to act with the same restraint and compassion as the prophet Ayyûb showed, so that every creature in this world may be treated with respect and mercy.
