In Surah An-Naml, "The Ants," the Quran relates a singular episode from the life of the Prophet Solomon (Sulayman, upon whom be peace). Solomon marched at the head of his army, composed of men, jinn, and birds, when the procession approached a valley inhabited by ants.

The Ant's Warning Cry

It was then that an ant, seeing this vast army approach, cried out to warn its companions to take shelter, lest they be crushed without even Solomon and his troops noticing.

﴿ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَتَوْا عَلَىٰ وَادِ النَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوا مَسَاكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَانُ وَجُنُودُهُ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ ﴾

"When they came to the valley of the ants, an ant said: 'O ants, enter your dwellings, lest Solomon and his armies crush you while they do not perceive.'"

(Surah An-Naml, verse 18)

The following verse makes clear that Solomon, hearing this cry, smiled, both amused and moved by the ant's words, and he prayed to God, thanking Him for granting him the favor of understanding the speech of creatures and of remaining grateful to Him.

A Lesson in Vigilance and Humility

Commentators of the Quran have highlighted several teachings drawn from this brief passage. First, the ant, though minuscule and possessed of no apparent strength, displays admirable responsibility: it watches over its community and gives warning without waiting for danger to be imminent. It is reported that certain exegetes saw in this scene an example of collective concern, where even the smallest beings organize their mutual protection.

Furthermore, Solomon's own reaction is itself rich with teaching. Rather than displaying any superiority toward this small creature, the prophet smiles with kindness and gives thanks to God. This moment illustrates the idea that no creature, however humble, is unworthy of attention, and that wisdom sometimes consists in knowing how to listen to what one believed was inaudible.

This narrative also reminds us that the animal world, in the Quranic vision, is not a mere silent backdrop: ants, like other creatures mentioned in the Quran, possess their own form of organization, communication, and awareness of danger. The Quran speaks elsewhere, in Surah An-Nahl devoted to the bees, of this same idea of a natural order where each creature has its place and function.

What This Teaches Us Today

This story, though brief, invites us to regard the smallest creatures around us in a different light. An ant crossing our path is not a simple insignificant detail: it belongs to a living order, organized, capable of vigilance and solidarity toward its own kind.

To remember this episode is to recall that kindness toward animals begins with simple attention: watching where one steps, avoiding the needless destruction of a nest or an anthill, and recognizing that each creature, however discreet, holds a place ordained in the balance of life. Like Solomon smiling at the wisdom of a small ant, cultivating this gentleness toward the humblest creatures is a concrete way of honoring creation as a whole.
