Swallowed by an enormous fish at the bottom of the sea, the prophet Yunus found himself alone in threefold darkness. From these depths came a prayer that has since become a refuge for every troubled heart.
The prophet Yunus (Jonah), sent to his people, left his city before God commanded him to do so, discouraged because he was not being heard. He boarded a ship that set out to sea, but the sea grew violently turbulent, threatening to engulf the vessel. The sailors, believing that a passenger had brought misfortune, drew lots to determine who should be cast into the water to lighten the boat. The lot fell on Yunus—three times according to what is reported—and he cast himself into the sea.
The Great Fish Sent by God
It was then that an enormous fish, sent by God for this very purpose, swallowed him in a single motion, without injuring or crushing him. The Quran recounts this episode in Surah As-Saffat:
﴿ فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ ٱلْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ ﴾
"The fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy."
(Surah As-Saffat, verse 142)
Yunus found himself thus enclosed within the animal's belly, plunged into a darkness that scholars describe as threefold: the darkness of night, the darkness of the ocean depths, and the darkness of the fish's belly itself. In this absolute solitude, far from any human help, he turned towards his Lord.
The Prayer in Darkness
It was in this state that Yunus spoke the words recorded in Surah Al-Anbiya:
﴿ فَنَادَىٰ فِى ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ أَن لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ ﴾
"He cried out in the darknesses: 'There is no god but You! Glory be to You! I have truly been among the wrongdoers.'"
(Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 87)
The Quran then clarifies that God answered him and delivered him from his distress, adding that it is thus that He saves the sincere believers. Yunus was then expelled by the fish onto a shore, exhausted and ill, as mentioned in Surah As-Saffat. God then caused a plant to grow over him, generally identified as a gourd plant, to provide him shade and comfort during his recovery.
A Fish in Service of God's Will
This narrative shows that the fish does not act on its own initiative: it is an instrument chosen and guided by God, entrusted with a precise mission—to receive Yunus without causing him harm, then to restore him to life once the trial was complete. The animal is neither an agent of punishment nor a mere predator: it becomes the setting for a spiritual lesson on repentance, patience, and divine mercy.
This passage is so striking that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned Yunus in several hadiths reported in Sahih al-Bukhari, recalling his eminent place among the prophets and urging that no prideful hierarchy be established between them.
This narrative also invites us to regard marine creatures with careful attention, for their lives and behavior often escape our immediate understanding. The fish that receives Yunus without harming him reminds us that each animal has a place in the order of the world, and deserves respect and protection for that reason: not to mistreat them, to preserve their habitats, and to remember that kindness towards all living creatures is part of a balanced faith attentive to all life.
