Cats eat small amounts at each feeding because their stomach is tiny—just a few dozen grams are enough to fill it. This limited capacity, inherited from their solitary wild ancestor that hunted small prey, explains why cats graze throughout the day rather than eating large meals like dogs do.

A stomach built for small prey

In the wild, cats hunt prey weighing just a few dozen grams each—a mouse typically weighs 20 to 30 grams. Their digestive system has adapted to this size: the stomach expands only slightly and sends a fullness signal quickly, which naturally limits the amount eaten at one time, regardless of how hungry the cat really is.

This small stomach capacity is not a problem as long as the cat eats several times throughout the day. The real warning sign is not the small amount per meal, but a lasting overall drop in what the cat consumes over several days.

The danger of prolonged fasting: hepatic lipidosis

In cats, loss of appetite or a significant drop in food intake for more than two to three days can trigger hepatic lipidosis: the liver, called upon to mobilize fat reserves as an energy source, becomes saturated with fat and loses its function. This process is unique to cats, whose liver metabolism handles rapid, large-scale fat mobilization poorly.

Overweight cats are most at risk: their abundant fat reserves flow to the liver as soon as appetite drops, increasing the danger. Any cat, regardless of weight, that eats noticeably less than usual for more than 24 to 48 hours should be seen by a veterinarian, because hepatic lipidosis is life-threatening if not treated promptly.
