A dog may ask for food right after a meal because the physical signals that trigger fullness have not yet kicked in: the mechanical stretching of the stomach and the hormonal cascade (drop in ghrelin, rise in leptin and cholecystokinin) take roughly fifteen to twenty minutes to register in the brain—a delay that a meal gulped down in a minute easily exceeds.
A gap between stomach and brain
Fullness is not instantaneous: it results from two complementary processes. On one hand, stretch receptors in the stomach wall tell the brainstem that the amount eaten is sufficient. On the other hand, digestive hormones like cholecystokinin and peptide YY are released gradually in the intestine after food passes through, while ghrelin—the hunger hormone produced by the stomach—drops more slowly. In a dog that wolfing down its meal in a few dozen seconds, these signals arrive long after the bowl is empty: the brain continues to sense hunger while the stomach is actually full.
This problem is made worse by the nature of dry commercial food, which is very calorie-dense and low in water. The same amount of energy takes up far less stomach space than a meal rich in fiber or water, further delaying the stretch threshold needed to trigger mechanical fullness. For the same calories, a wet food or one enriched with fermentable fiber distends the stomach more and slows digestion, which promotes an earlier and longer-lasting sense of satisfaction.
A purely physical phenomenon, not a behavioral one
This mechanism is independent of any learned habits around the dinner table: it depends on eating speed and the nutritional composition of the meal, not on a begging habit. If excessive hunger or abnormal weight gain persists, a veterinary check-up rules out an underlying medical condition.
