How long does a giraffe sleep?

An adult giraffe sleeps about four to five hours a day, in short bursts — and deep sleep rarely exceeds a few minutes at a time. It is one of the shortest and most fragmented sleeps of large mammals.

Sleep standing up, lie down as little as possible

The giraffe most often dozes standing up, with its eyes half-closed. She only lies down for brief episodes of paradoxical sleep, with her neck bent backwards and her head resting on her rump. This posture makes her extremely vulnerable: getting up takes several seconds - an eternity against a lion. The pressure of predators has shaped a sleep fragmented into dozens of micro-naps.

In captivity, where danger disappears, observations show durations a little longer than in the savannah: proof that this short sleep is a survival strategy rather than a reduced need.

Where does the “thirty minutes” come from?

We often read that a giraffe only sleeps thirty minutes a day. This figure corresponds to cumulative deep sleep, not total rest: by adding up all the phases of drowsiness, we reach several hours.
