Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestine caused by tiny single-celled parasites called coccidia, of the genus Isospora or Eimeria depending on the bird species. In the satin bowerbird, an Australian bird sometimes kept in aviaries or zoological parks, this disease primarily affects the intestine and can cause diarrhea, sometimes bloody. Young birds and weakened or stressed individuals are most at risk. The most common signs are diarrhea, sometimes tinged with blood, general lethargy and loss of appetite.
The bird may appear tired, remaining huddled at the bottom of the aviary, with ruffled or fluffed feathers, a classic sign of distress in birds.
Progressive weight loss develops if the infection persists, sometimes accompanied by visible dehydration (dry skin, sunken eyes).

Causes and risk factors
Coccidiosis is caused by microscopic parasites called coccidia, which multiply in the cells lining the bird's intestine. These parasites are shed in the droppings as resistant eggs called oocysts, which then contaminate the soil, water or food in the aviary.
Young birds, whose immune systems are still immature, are more vulnerable.
Crowded, damp, or poorly cleaned living conditions favour the accumulation of oocysts and repeated infection.
Stress from transport, environmental change, difficult social conditions, or inappropriate diet weakens natural defences and makes the disease more likely to develop in birds already carrying the parasite.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through the oral route, when the bird ingests oocysts present in contaminated droppings, on the ground, in drinking water or on soiled food. There is no direct transmission from one bird to another without the environment playing a role.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian diagnoses the condition through microscopic examination of faeces, allowing coccidian oocysts to be identified. Complete clinical examination of the bird and sometimes additional tests help assess the overall impact on the body and rule out other causes of diarrhoea.
Treatment
Treatment relies on specific antiparasitic drugs called anticoccidials, prescribed by the veterinarian depending on the severity of infection. Supporting measures such as rehydration or nutritional support may be needed as well, always under veterinary supervision.

Prevention
Maintaining strict hygiene in the aviary is the most important measure: regular cleaning of the floor, feeders, and water drinkers.
Avoiding overcrowding and stagnant moisture limits oocyst survival in the environment.
Reducing stress triggers, especially when introducing new birds, helps preserve natural defences.
Regular veterinary check-ups with faecal examination allow early detection of infestation before serious symptoms appear.
Possible complications
Without treatment, severe dehydration can develop, especially in young birds, putting their life at risk. Prolonged intestinal infection can also weaken the bird permanently and make it more susceptible to other diseases.
When to see a veterinarian
The bird has diarrhoea lasting more than a day or two.
Blood is visible in the droppings.
The bird remains inactive with ruffled feathers and does not return to normal activity.
Weight loss or loss of appetite is noticed.
A young bird shows any of these signs, as the disease can progress more rapidly in young birds.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good in a healthy adult that receives appropriate treatment. It becomes more guarded in young birds or when treatment is delayed, as dehydration and general weakness may worsen the outlook.
