The disease primarily affects alligators raised in captivity, in breeding farms or zoological parks, where close confinement promotes its spread.

Intensive breeding facilities and zoos with high animal density are most at risk. Transmission
Transmission occurs primarily through ingestion of water or food contaminated by infected feces. Cleaning equipment shared between tanks can also play a role in disease spread.
Diagnosis and care
