What is it?
Dicroceliosis is caused by the liver fluke, a tiny, translucent, lancet-shaped flatworm that resides in the bile ducts of sheep and goats. It is often confused with the great fluke, but they are completely different. The greater fluke requires stagnant water and marshy areas; the small fluke thrives on dry land, limestone hills, pastures and fallows. It is the liver parasite of dry regions, therefore of most of the Tunisian and North African regions. Its cycle is one of the most astonishing in the veterinary world: it passes through a land snail, then through an ant whose behavior is manipulated by the parasite. The disease is almost always silent. It does not kill spectacularly: it eats away at the general condition, growth and production, season after season, and is most often discovered in the slaughterhouse on seized livers.

These signs are neither exhaustive nor specific. Only a veterinarian can establish a diagnosis.

Most often, nothing visible: animals that appear normal can harbor a very large number of small flukes.
When the infestation is old and massive: slow weight loss, animals which do not recover after lactation, dull, brittle wool of less value.
Fatigue from exertion, animals which stay behind on uneven routes.
Decreased appetite and reduced milk production in females.
Paleness of the mucous membranes when anemia sets in, generally discreet compared to that of the red abomasum worm.
Soft swelling under the jaw in advanced cases.
Jaundice is rare, contrary to what many imagine of liver disease.
In growing young people, a simple stagnation of weight even though the ration seems sufficient.
The real warning sign is therefore not a symptom but information: livers regularly seized at the slaughterhouse from animals on the farm.
When to consult without delay
This list does not replace veterinary advice. It gathers situations that justify a prompt consultation.
Causes and risk factors
Adult flukes live in the bile ducts and lay eggs which pass away with the droppings.
A land snail, which lives on dry land and not in water, swallows these eggs. The parasite multiplies there, then the snail rejects masses of larvae coated in mucus, in the form of small sticky balls.
Ants come to drink this mucus and swallow the larvae. One of the larvae reaches the nervous system of the ant and modifies its behavior: in the evening and early morning, when it is cool, the infested ant climbs to the top of a blade of grass and clings to it by its jaws instead of returning to the anthill.
The sheep swallows the ant while grazing. Unlike the large fluke, young flukes do not pass through the liver: they go directly up the bile ducts from the intestine. This is why there is no acute destructive form as in fasciolosis.
Installed in the canals, they irritate and thicken them slowly over months, even years.
Dry routes, limestone hills, stony terrain, fallows and scrubland areas: exactly the environments where we find land snails and anthills.
Grazing early in the morning or late in the day during cool periods.
Older animals, which accumulate flukes year after year, immunity against this parasite being low.
Herds driven on the same routes for years without rotation.
Malnourished animals or those carrying other digestive parasites: the combination weighs much more than the small fluke alone.
Areas where several species of ruminants and equines follow one another on the same plots.
Transmission
There is no direct contagion from one animal to another: everything happens through the ingestion of ants infested with the grass.
The risk is greatest during cool hours, early in the morning and at the end of the day, when parasitized ants cling to the top of plants. Grazing during hot times mechanically reduces exposure.
A contaminated plot remains so for a very long time: snails and ants constitute a lasting reservoir, independent of the presence of sheep.
Cattle, goats, donkeys, camels and several wild animals can also harbor the parasite and maintain the cycle on the same routes.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies a lot on the context: type of route, age of the animals, history of liver seizures at the slaughterhouse.
Analyzing droppings is possible but delicate. Small fluke eggs are small, brown and heavy: they require a particular sedimentation technique and escape the methods routinely used for roundworms. This must be specified to the laboratory, otherwise the result may come back falsely negative.
Egg excretion is irregular: a single negative analysis does not rule out infestation, especially in a lightly loaded animal.
Examining the liver of a dead or slaughtered animal remains the most reliable element: thickened, protruding, whitish bile ducts, and fine flukes visible when pressing the tissue.
Feedback from the slaughterhouse is a real monitoring tool: systematically ask what has been observed on the livers of your animals.
The veterinarian also checks the absence of other parasites, because the small fluke is rarely the only cause of weight loss.
Treatment
Crucial point: not all products active against large flukes work against small flukes. Some douvicides that are very effective on fasciolosis have no effect here. Using the wrong product amounts to paying for a treatment for nothing while believing the herd is protected.
The choice of molecule, form and timing is up to the veterinarian, based on the diagnosis and locally available products.
The small fluke is housed in thickened bile ducts, which makes it more difficult to reach than other parasites: partial failures are common and monitoring after treatment is useful.
No dose or rhythm should be decided on your own initiative. Systematic and repeated treatment of the entire herd, without diagnosis, is expensive and accelerates the appearance of resistance.
Thin animals also need a sustained diet: the liver takes time to recover and deworming alone does not restore the condition.
Waiting times for meat and milk differ significantly from one product to another and several are prohibited for females whose milk is consumed. Have them specified before any slaughter or milking.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
There is no way to eliminate land snails and ants from a course: the fight against intermediate hosts is not realistic, unlike what is done for the large fluke with wetlands.
Rotate the routes and avoid bringing the same animals back to the same infested areas every year.
Shifting entry to the pasture towards the warmer hours of the day, when parasitized ants have released the blades of grass, reduces the number of ants swallowed.
Avoid closely mowing fodder intended for green distribution on plots known to be contaminated.
Monitor returns from the slaughterhouse: repeated liver seizures indicate a lasting problem and warrant talking to the veterinarian.
Support the diet, particularly in proteins and minerals: a well-fed animal copes much better with a chronic parasitic load.
Reason a possible treatment with the veterinarian, rather than on a fixed date, taking into account the season and the condition of the herd.
Possible complications
Permanent thickening and hardening of the bile ducts, with a liver that never returns completely to normal.
Chronic weight loss, poor recovery after lactation, declining fertility.
Slow anemia, devalued wool, insufficient growth of young people.
Systematic seizure of livers at the slaughterhouse, with direct and repeated economic loss.
Worsening of all other parasitic diseases in the herd, the small fluke adding to an already present load.
When to see a veterinarian
Animals lose weight slowly on dry rangelands, without diarrhea and without any other explanation.
The slaughterhouse reports livers seized from your animals, even if the herd appears healthy.
Ewes do not return to their condition after lactation from one year to the next.
Milk production is dropping in the herd for no obvious cause.
A treatment against the fluke was done and the animals are not improving: the product was perhaps not active on the small fluke, this needs to be checked.
Pale mucous membranes or swelling under the jaw appear: consult without delay, other more quickly fatal parasites give the same signs.
Transmission to humans
Human infestation by the small fluke exists but remains exceptional: it involves swallowing an infested ant, for example with raw plants picked up on a trail or a drink left in the open air. Sheep meat is never involved.
Above all, there is one analytical pitfall to be aware of: after a meal of parasitized liver, fluke eggs can pass through the human digestive tract without any parasite having taken hold. A stool analysis can then come back falsely positive. It is false parasitism, without disease.
The precautions are common sense: wash plants eaten raw, cover drinks and food during meals taken on the trail, cook offal well.
If in doubt about human contamination, you should consult a doctor, not a veterinarian.
Prognosis
Infested animals live a long time with the parasite: direct death is rare, but loss of production is continuous.
A well-chosen treatment improves the general condition, without erasing the lesions already established in the liver.
At the herd level, the disease does not disappear from a range: the realistic objective is to limit the load and its consequences, not to eradicate the parasite.
Frequently asked questions
My land is dry, without a pond: I thought I was safe from the moat?
This is true for the greater liver fluke, which needs stagnant water and aquatic snails. But the little fluke specifically likes dry and limestone soil, because it uses a land snail and an ant. A dry route therefore absolutely does not protect against dicroceliosis.
Why did my scat analysis find nothing even though the liver was seized?
Small fluke eggs are heavy and require special laboratory technique: the methods routinely used for roundworms do not reveal them. You must tell the veterinarian that you are looking for a fluke. In addition, excretion is irregular: a negative analysis is not enough to rule out the parasite.
Does the dewormer that I use against the large fluke also work on the small one?
Not necessarily, and this is the most common mistake. Several products that are very effective on fasciolosis have no action on the small fluke. Explicitly ask the veterinarian for a product active on dicroceliosis, otherwise you treat without treating.
Can I get this fluke from eating my sheep's liver?
No. The parasitized liver is discarded at the slaughterhouse and human contamination does not pass through the meat or the cooked liver. It would involve swallowing an infested ant, which is very rare. Be aware, however, that after a meal of parasitized liver, a human stool analysis may falsely come back positive, without there being any disease.
