Laminitis is a painful condition of the foot, well known in domestic horses but also affecting plains zebras in zoos, reserves or wildlife care centers. It involves inflammation and then breakdown of the tissues connecting the bone inside the foot to the hoof wall, called laminae. When these tissues deteriorate, the internal bone of the foot loses its anchor point and may shift, causing intense pain and sometimes lasting disability.
In wild equids such as zebras, the disease is less documented than in domestic horses, but the biological mechanisms are considered similar because the foot anatomy is comparable.

An affected animal shows reluctance to move and often adopts a characteristic posture, shifting weight backward to relieve the front feet, which are most frequently affected.
The gait becomes stiff and cautious, as if the ground were hot. In severe cases, a zebra may refuse to stand or remain lying down for extended periods, which is particularly concerning in a species where standing is vital for protection against predators in the wild.
Abnormal heat over the hoof and increased digital pulse (felt just above the hoof) may also be observed by a professional. Fever can accompany forms linked to an underlying systemic disease.

Causes and risk factors
Laminitis is not a single disease but rather the final consequence of several possible imbalances. The most common are excess intake of fermentable carbohydrates (access to feed that is too rich, very sugary young grass), a hormonal disorder such as excess insulin or cortisol, a severe systemic disease with release of toxins into the circulation, or excessive mechanical overload on one foot following injury to the other limb.
In a wild animal such as a zebra kept in captivity, the main risk is often related to inappropriate feed that is too energy-dense compared to the actual needs of the species in its natural state.
Overweight and a diet too high in sugar or starch significantly increase risk. Uncontrolled access to very rich pasture, especially in spring, is a classic factor in equids in general.
Metabolic disorders such as equine metabolic syndrome or pituitary gland disease can predispose certain individuals, although these conditions are mainly described in domestic horses and remain poorly characterized in zebras.
Stress from transport or environmental change, as well as a concurrent severe infectious disease, are also recognized risk factors in equids.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on the veterinarian's physical examination, which assesses gait, posture, warmth in the feet, and digital pulse. X-rays of the foot allow evaluation of the position of the coffin bone relative to the hoof wall and determine the severity of the condition.
Blood tests may be requested to identify hormonal causes or underlying systemic disease. In wild animals that are difficult to handle, such as zebras, these examinations often require chemical restraint administered by the veterinarian.
Treatment
Management aims to relieve pain, slow tissue damage in the foot, and treat the underlying cause. It may include anti-inflammatory medication, mechanical support of the foot through proper trimming and shock-absorbing materials, strict rest, and dietary correction.
If a hormonal condition or systemic disease is identified, specific treatment of that cause is started alongside supportive care. In severe or chronic cases, specialized orthopedic management may be necessary.

Prevention

In facilities that house zebras, regular veterinary observation including foot examination is part of good preventive management practices.

Possible complications include rotation or sinking of the coffin bone within the hoof, chronic debilitating pain, and in the most severe cases, penetration of the sole. These situations can compromise the animal's prognosis for survival, particularly in a wild species where prolonged immobility presents major management challenges.
