Sarcoptic mange is a skin disease caused by a tiny mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows under the capybara's skin.
This animal, often raised in captivity or observed in zoological parks in Tunisia, can be affected like other mammals.
The disease causes severe itching and skin lesions that gradually get worse if nothing is done.

The most striking sign is intense and repeated scratching, which can lead to self-harm.
The skin turns red, then thickens and becomes covered with grayish crusts, especially on areas with little hair such as the ears, muzzle and limbs.
The coat sheds in patches, revealing rough and sometimes wrinkled skin, a bit like bark.
Over time, the animal loses weight, eats less and becomes despondent because the itching exhausts it and disrupts its sleep.
An unpleasant odor may emerge from the most affected areas in the event of a secondary infection.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a microscopic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows into the superficial layers of the skin to lay its eggs.
This activity causes an allergic and inflammatory reaction responsible for itching and skin lesions.
Direct contact with an already infested animal is the main risk factor.
Promiscuity in captivity, in overcrowded or poorly maintained enclosures, favors transmission between individuals.
A weakened immune system, significant stress or poor diet make the animal more vulnerable to a severe infestation.
Sharing litter, objects or spaces with other sensitive mammals (rodents, other park animals) also increases the risk.
Transmission
Transmission occurs primarily through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infested animal.
It can also occur indirectly via an environment recently contaminated by a sick animal, such as litter or shared equipment.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian examines the skin and asks about the history of the animal and its environment.
The definitive diagnosis is made by a skin scraping, a sample then examined under a microscope to identify mites or their eggs.
In some cases, a skin biopsy or other additional tests may be necessary if the scraping remains negative despite suggestive signs.
Treatment
Treatment is based on specific external or systemic antiparasitics, prescribed and dosed only by a veterinarian.
Skin care products, such as soothing shampoos or cleansers, may accompany treatment to relieve itching.
In the event of a secondary bacterial infection linked to scratching, additional antibiotic treatment may be added.
Regular veterinary monitoring makes it possible to check the effectiveness of the treatment and adjust the treatment if necessary.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based on good enclosure hygiene, regular cleaning and avoiding overpopulation.

Without treatment, lesions can spread throughout the body and become infected with bacteria, worsening the general condition.
Severe weight loss and exhaustion linked to permanent itching can seriously weaken the animal.
In very advanced cases, the weakened animal becomes more susceptible to other diseases.

The animal scratches intensely and repeatedly.
Areas of skin lose hair or become crusted.
The skin appears thickened, rough, or has an unusual odor.
The animal loses weight, eats less or seems depressed without any other apparent cause.
Transmission to humans
Sarcoptes scabiei can occasionally pass to humans during close contact with an infested animal, causing itching and small skin lesions.
In humans, this form is generally transient and disappears on its own once contact with the source animal is interrupted, but medical advice remains useful in the event of symptoms.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally favorable if the disease is managed early with appropriate antiparasitic treatment.
If left untreated, the animal's condition can gradually deteriorate with a risk of serious complications.
