Sarcoptic mange is a skin disease caused by a tiny mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows into the thickness of the skin. In wallabies, this parasitosis is well known because it also affects wild populations of marsupials in Australia, where it can cause significant mortality. In captivity or in breeding, it remains a serious disease which requires rapid treatment.\nThe mite is transmitted by direct contact between animals or by a contaminated environment (litter, fences, shelters). It causes an intense inflammatory reaction in the skin, which is very uncomfortable for the animal.

The most striking sign is an intense itch that causes the wallaby to scratch, chew or rub against objects in its enclosure.\nThe skin turns red, then thickens and wrinkles, particularly around the ears, snout, limbs and base of the tail. Grayish or yellowish crusts gradually appear, and the coat falls off in patches.\nOver time, the skin can crack and ooze fluid, favoring secondary bacterial infections. The animal loses weight, becomes despondent, eats less and may become dehydrated. In advanced cases, exhaustion and infectious complications can lead to death if left unchecked.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by a microscopic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows into the superficial layers of the skin to lay its eggs. Its presence and movement trigger an allergic and inflammatory reaction in the host, causing itching and skin lesions.

Animals living in dense groups, in overcrowded or poorly maintained enclosures, are more exposed. Stress, an unbalanced diet or weakened immunity (young age, elderly animal, other concomitant illness) increase susceptibility to infestation and the severity of lesions. Contact with wild populations of infested marsupials is also a risk factor in Australia.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly by direct contact between an infested animal and a healthy animal. The mite can also survive for some time outside the host, which makes indirect contamination possible via litter, an enclosure or soiled equipment recently used by a sick animal.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian examines the skin and performs a skin scraping, that is to say a superficial sample of skin, which is then observed under a microscope to identify mites or their eggs. In some cases, multiple scrapings are necessary because the mite can be difficult to find.

Treatment

Treatment is based on external or systemic antiparasitics adapted to marsupials, prescribed and dosed only by the veterinarian. Skin treatments, such as soothing baths, can be combined. In the event of a secondary bacterial infection, additional antibiotic treatment may be necessary. Nutritional support and rehydration are sometimes useful in weakened animals.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention is based on good hygiene in enclosures, regular cleaning of bedding and equipment, and careful monitoring of the animals' skin, especially in the event of the introduction of a new resident. Isolating any suspicious animal before confirming its health status limits spread within the group. Limited contact with surrounding wildlife is recommended in farms or zoos.

Possible complications

Open skin lesions favor secondary bacterial infections, sometimes severe. An extensive and untreated infestation leads to marked weight loss, dehydration and general exhaustion which can lead to death, particularly in young or already weakened animals.

Transmission to humans

Sarcoptes scabiei can occasionally be transmitted to humans through contact with an infested animal, causing transient itching of the skin. This human form generally remains limited and disappears on its own once contact with the infested animal is interrupted, but medical advice is recommended in the event of symptoms.

Prognosis

The prognosis is favorable if the disease is detected and treated early. On the other hand, advanced sarcoptic mange, with extensive lesions and infectious complications, darkens the prognosis, especially in young, old or already weakened animals.
