Herpes in capuchin monkeys is a serious viral infection that affects capuchin monkeys (Cebus and Sapajus spp.), New World primates that are popular in captivity and sometimes kept as exotic pets.

The infection is caused by viruses of the Herpesviridae family. Some of these viruses are closely related to the well-known "Herpesvirus B," familiar in Asian macaques, but specific strains also circulate in New World monkeys such as capuchins.

This disease is concerning because it can progress very rapidly to affect the nervous system, with often a poor outlook once neurological signs develop. It also represents a zoonotic risk—that is, a risk of transmission to humans—which makes it a disease that must be taken very seriously in private collections or zoos.

Certain factors increase the risk of disease development or severity: introducing a new animal into a group without a quarantine period, housing animals of unknown health status together, stress from transport or environmental change, weakened immunity (young age, concurrent illness, malnutrition), and close confinement in overcrowded facilities.

Transmission

The virus is spread by direct contact with saliva or skin and mucous membrane lesions from a carrier animal, especially during bites, scratches, or social grooming. Contamination can also occur through soiled materials (food bowls, objects, bedding) that are not disinfected between animals.

Latent carriers may shed the virus intermittently, particularly during times of stress, which makes transmission sometimes difficult to predict.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
