Like many herpesviruses, this agent causes lesions on mucous membranes and skin, with periods during which the virus remains dormant in the body and reactivates during stress or when immunity is weakened.
The disease remains relatively uncommon and is mostly documented in captive animals, where close contact between individuals favours its spread.

The most frequent signs are ulcerated or crusty lesions in the mouth, on the lips or on facial skin. The animal may drool more than usual and have difficulty eating due to mouth pain.
General lethargy, loss of appetite and sometimes fever are often observed. In young animals or those with weakened immunity, digestive involvement with diarrhoea may add to the picture, worsening weight loss.
In more severe cases, the infection can spread throughout the body and affect multiple organs, which worsens the outlook.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a specific herpesvirus capable of infecting skin and mucous membrane cells. After initial infection, the virus can remain latent in the body—that is, hidden without causing symptoms—and then reactivate later.
Stress caused by captivity, changes in environment, overcrowding of enclosures, and any decline in immune defenses (concurrent disease, malnutrition) increase the risk of symptom onset or viral reactivation.
Young animals and individuals newly introduced to a group appear to be more vulnerable.
Transmission
The virus spreads mainly through direct contact between animals, via saliva or secretions from skin and oral lesions. Sharing food bowls, living spaces or close social contact (grooming, biting) promotes spread within a group.
