Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in colobus monkeys, whether living in a zoo or in the wild.
These small worms live in the animal's intestines and feed at its expense. In captivity, crowding, soil contaminated by feces, and stress promote their multiplication.
In most well-fed colobus, infestation remains subtle and causes few signs. However, in young animals, weakened individuals, or in cases of heavy parasite burden, the consequences can become serious, leading to marked weight loss.

Diarrhea or soft stools may be observed, sometimes with visible worms present, a dull coat that becomes less silky, progressive loss of appetite, and weight loss despite apparently normal feeding.
The animal may seem more tired, less active, and show a swollen belly or sensitivity when touched. In young colobus, stunted growth is possible.
In severe cases, dehydration and marked lethargy can appear, especially when multiple worm species are present at the same time.

Causes and risk factors
Several families of roundworms (nematodes) can affect colobus monkeys, notably ascarids, strongyles, and whipworms, similar to those found in other primates.
These parasites are most often transmitted by ingestion of eggs present in an environment contaminated by fecal material, or sometimes by contact with contaminated soil. The life cycle varies depending on the worm species, with some eggs able to survive for long periods in the environment.
Living in a group and in a confined enclosure increases the risk of repeated contamination.
Insufficient cleaning of floors and bedding areas, high animal density, chronic stress, unbalanced diet, or a weakened immune system (young animals, elderly animals, sick animals) promote the establishment and worsening of parasitism.
Introduction of new animals without quarantine or prior parasite screening is also a significant risk factor in captivity.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Prevention relies on strict enclosure hygiene: regular cleaning, daily removal of feces, disinfection of surfaces, and moisture control to reduce egg survival. Quarantining and screening all new animals before introducing them to the group prevents the introduction of new parasites. A balanced diet tailored to the colobus's nutritional needs also strengthens its natural resistance.

A heavy, untreated infestation can lead to anemia, persistent growth delays in young animals, intestinal blockage in rare severe cases, and general weakness that makes the animal more vulnerable to other diseases.
