It causes respiratory, digestive and sometimes nervous damage, with a progression which can be serious in fragile subjects. The virus circulates in many racing and meat pigeon farms without always causing visible signs, which complicates its control.

Signs vary depending on the age and condition of the bird. In young people, we often observe depression, lack of appetite and breathing difficulties with runny nose or eyes. Digestive problems such as diarrhea may appear, sometimes associated with a yellowish color indicating liver damage. In more severe forms, tremors, paralysis or head tilt may occur, a sign of damage to the nervous system. Some adult carrier pigeons show no visible symptoms but remain contagious, especially during periods of stress such as transport or breeding.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by columbin herpesvirus type 1, a DNA virus that often persists in a latent state in carrier birds. The virus reactivates during periods of stress, weakening the bird's immune defenses and promoting the appearance of symptoms.
Young, unweaned pigeons are particularly vulnerable. Overcrowding in lofts, stress linked to transport or competitions, an unbalanced diet and the presence of other concomitant infections increase the risk of the appearance of clinical disease. Farms bringing together birds of diverse origins are more exposed.
Transmission
The virus is transmitted mainly by direct contact between birds, via respiratory secretions, droppings or contaminated food and water. Transmission can also occur when the parents feed the young, which explains the frequency of the disease in young pigeons.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on the breeding history, the clinical examination of the bird and the observation of symptoms. Laboratory analyses, such as the search for the virus by PCR or the examination of tissues after autopsy on a deceased bird, make it possible to confirm the diagnosis, because clinical signs alone are not sufficient to distinguish this disease from other respiratory or digestive infections of pigeons.
Treatment
There is no specific antiviral treatment. Treatment aims to support the sick bird: fluids to combat dehydration, nutritional supplements, and treatment of secondary bacterial infections with antibiotics if necessary. Rest in a calm and clean environment promotes recovery.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based above all on good breeding practices: limiting the density of birds, ensuring rigorous hygiene in the dovecote, regularly disinfecting feeders and drinkers, and isolating new arrivals before integrating them into the group. Reducing sources of stress and maintaining a balanced diet helps limit reactivation of the virus in latent carriers. There is no widely available vaccine against this disease.
Possible complications
Secondary bacterial or parasitic infections are common in birds weakened by herpesvirus. In severe forms affecting the liver or nervous system, the outcome can be fatal, particularly in young pigeons.
