Avian trichomoniasis is an infection caused by a tiny single-celled parasite, Trichomonas gallinae. This parasite settles in the mouth, throat and crop of the bird. In the buzzard, a bird of prey that often feeds on pigeons and other birds carrying the parasite, this disease is a frequent and serious cause of mortality, especially among young birds.

Affected birds often have difficulty swallowing food, profuse salivation and sometimes regurgitation. Yellowish, caseous deposits may appear at the back of the throat, in the beak or crop, hindering breathing. The bird becomes despondent, refuses to eat, gradually loses weight. In advanced forms, marked respiratory difficulty may appear if the lesions obstruct the upper airways. Death can occur within a few days in severe cases, particularly in young buzzards.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by the flagellate protozoan Trichomonas gallinae, a fragile parasite that does not survive long outside its host. It multiplies in the mucous membranes of the throat and crop, causing inflammatory lesions and then necrosis which forms the characteristic caseous deposits.

Young buzzards in the nest are particularly vulnerable because they are fed on potentially infected prey by the parents. The proximity of populations of pigeons or columbids, major reservoirs of the parasite, increases the risk. Stress, weakened immunity or a high density of infected prey in the environment also favor the appearance of the disease.

Transmission

Contamination occurs mainly by ingestion of infected prey, in particular pigeons and doves, very common natural reservoirs of the parasite. Transmission can also occur from an adult bird to its young during feeding (regurgitation), or through contaminated drinking water shared between birds.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian examines the bird's mouth, throat and crop for the characteristic caseous deposits. A sample of the oral mucosa or crop, examined under a microscope, confirms the presence of the mobile parasite. In certain cases, additional examinations (radiography, endoscopy) are carried out to assess the extent of the lesions, particularly if the respiratory tract seems affected.

Treatment

Treatment is based on specific antiparasitics from the nitroimidazole family, prescribed only by the veterinarian. Supportive treatment is often necessary: ​​rehydration, assisted nutrition if the bird can no longer swallow, and sometimes surgical removal of the largest deposits which interfere with breathing or eating.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

There is no vaccine against this disease. Prevention is mainly based on environmental management in care centers or in captivity: limiting contact with sick pigeons, ensuring clean drinking water that is changed regularly, disinfecting feeding equipment. For wild buzzards, there is no direct prevention measure possible, disease being one of the natural risks linked to the species' diet.

Possible complications

Without treatment, the lesions can grow to the point where they completely obstruct the pharynx, leading to death from asphyxiation or inability to feed. The infection can also spread to the esophagus, the crop, or even reach the liver and other internal organs in the most serious disseminated forms.

Prognosis

The prognosis depends greatly on the precocity of treatment. Detected early, trichomoniasis generally responds well to antiparasitic treatment. On the other hand, in the case of extensive lesions obstructing the digestive or respiratory tract, or in a young person who is already very weakened, the prognosis becomes reserved, even dark.
