In mussels, signs of disease are difficult to observe directly. General weakness may be noted, a mussel unable to close its shell properly, a decrease in filter-feeding activity, or a shell opening abnormally even out of water. The most visible sign for the producer remains abnormal and sometimes rapid mortality within a batch or rope of mussels, with no obvious cause initially.

They multiply in the hemolymph (the mussel's "blood") and tissues, causing inflammation and cell destruction that can lead to the animal's death.

The main risk factors are high water temperature (especially in summer), stress from handling or transport, overstocking in farming areas, declining water quality (pollution, low oxygen), and general weakness of the mussel from other pathogens or from an intense breeding period that depletes the animal's reserves.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly through seawater, in which Vibrio bacteria are naturally present. A weakened mussel can be colonized by these opportunistic bacteria. The bacterium can also spread from one individual to another within the same tank or farming rope, especially in conditions of high density and shared environmental stress.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

There is no bedside diagnosis for mussels. In cases of abnormal mortality, the mussel farmer must collect samples and send them to a veterinary laboratory or a laboratory specializing in mollusk pathology. Diagnosis is based on bacterial culture of hemolymph or tissues, combined with molecular biology techniques (PCR) to identify the Vibrio species involved. Analysis of the water and farming environment is also carried out to look for contributing factors (temperature, salinity, pollution).

Treatment

There is no curative treatment that can be applied at scale in open water for farmed mussels. Management relies on sanitary measures: removal of dead animals, reduction of environmental stress, improvement of farming conditions (stocking density, water quality), and follow-up by competent veterinary authorities and laboratories. Antibiotic use is not common practice in natural or semi-open environments.

Selecting hardier strains or batches, along with regular health monitoring by professionals, makes it possible to detect abnormal mortality outbreaks quickly and limit their spread.

The main complications are massive mortality that can affect a significant portion of a production batch or tank, with substantial economic losses for producers. Bacterial infection can also occur alongside other pathogens (viruses, parasites) or environmental stress, which worsens mortality. There is no known risk of complications in human consumers if sanitary rules for harvesting and preparation are followed, as the disease affects the animal and not humans through normal consumption.
