Their complex life cycle involves several hosts: a bird or fish, a mollusc like the mussel, and sometimes another aquatic animal.

The mussel serves as an intermediate host. The parasite establishes itself in the mussel's tissues, particularly in the digestive glands, mantle, or gonads (reproductive organs). This infestation does not make the mussel unsafe for human consumption, but it can weaken the animal and harm shellfish farming production.

This phenomenon occurs in many mussel farming areas worldwide, including the Mediterranean.

Farming areas close to nesting sites of seabirds or frequented by many aquatic birds present increased risk. High density of mussels in farming systems also favours the presence of parasites. Water quality, temperature, and salinity can influence the parasite's life cycle and its ability to infect mussels.

Transmission

Transmission occurs through the aquatic environment. Free-living parasite larvae present in seawater directly enter the mussel during its feeding filtration. There is no direct transmission between mussels. The cycle depends on the presence of definitive hosts (birds, fish) in the farming or harvesting area.
