Infected squid become lethargic and swim abnormally, sometimes drifting or remaining motionless at the bottom of the tank. Loss of appetite and general weakness are observed. Skin lesions or necrotic areas (damaged tissue) may appear on the mantle or tentacles, often accompanied by discoloration of the skin. In eggs and larvae, infection can cause abnormal development, stunted growth, or significant mortality before hatching. Causes and risk factors

The infection is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio (such as Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio splendidus, or other marine species), which occur naturally in seawater and sometimes in the animal's normal microbiota. These bacteria become pathogenic when the balance is disrupted—for example, due to stress, injury, or reduced immune defenses in the squid.

The main contributing factors are poor water quality (water temperature too high, insufficient oxygen levels, buildup of organic matter), high stocking density in the same tank, stress from capture or transport, and skin injuries that create an entry point for bacteria. Young squid and eggs are especially vulnerable because their immune system is not yet fully developed.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly through contaminated water, by direct contact between individuals, or by vertical transmission to eggs. Bacteria can also spread via non-disinfected farming equipment.

Without prompt treatment, the infection can lead to septicemia (generalized infection), widespread tissue death, and significant mortality, particularly in young squid and egg populations in hatcheries.
