Bacterial skin necrosis is a disease that affects the skin of reef octopus. It results in the progressive destruction of areas of skin, which become whitish then blacken. It is a known condition in cephalopods kept in captivity, in aquariums or breeding tanks, but it can also occur in the natural environment after an injury. It is linked to the proliferation of opportunistic bacteria which take advantage of already weakened skin.

The first signs are discreet: a small area of skin that turns pale or loses its normal texture.\n\nThis area then evolves into a more marked lesion, often whitish or grayish, which can spread.\n\nOver time, the lesion can turn black and form a sort of crust, a sign that the underlying tissues are affected.\n\nThe sick octopus often changes its behavior: it eats less, stays hidden, moves little or swims irregularly. abnormal.\n\nIn advanced cases, the lesion may open and reveal internal tissue, exposing the animal to an even more serious infection.

Causes and risk factors

The best prevention is based on maintaining very good water quality, with effective filtration and stable parameters.\n\nYou must avoid any abrasive or sharp objects in the pool or aquarium, and limit sources of stress such as frequent handling or cohabitation with aggressive species.\n\nRegular monitoring of the animal's skin allows any suspicious lesions to be detected early.\n\nA suitable and varied diet also contributes to maintaining good natural defenses.

Possible complications

Without treatment, the lesion can spread and affect deeper tissues. A generalized infection can then develop, putting the survival of the animal at risk. Healing can also be incomplete and leave areas of skin permanently weakened.

Prognosis
