Vibrio infection is a common bacterial disease in crabs raised in tanks or living in marine and lagoon environments. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, naturally present in seawater, which become pathogenic when the animal is weakened or stressed. It affects both wild and farmed crabs (aquaculture), particularly in Tunisian coastal areas where water salinity and temperature promote bacterial proliferation.

Affected crabs become soft, weak, and unresponsive. They stop eating and often remain immobile at the bottom of the tank or aquarium.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by several species of bacteria from the genus Vibrio, some of which are well known in marine aquaculture. These bacteria normally live in water and sediment without causing problems. They become invasive when the shell is injured, during molting, or when the crab's immune system is weakened.
Overcrowding in tanks, poor water quality, sudden changes in temperature or salinity, and stress from transport promote the disease. Recently molted crabs, whose new shell is still fragile, are particularly vulnerable. Water rich in organic matter or infrequently renewed also increases risk.
