Bacterial skin infection in scorpionfish is a skin disease caused by opportunistic bacteria naturally present in seawater. It mainly affects weakened or injured scorpionfish, or those kept in poor conditions, whether in an aquarium or in farming. The skin, already rich in protective mucus in this fish, loses its barrier function and allows bacteria to develop locally. This disease is not transmissible to humans under normal handling conditions.

Early signs are often subtle: the fish becomes less active and hides more. Red or irritated areas appear on the skin, sometimes accompanied by small wounds or ulcers that do not heal. The fins may become frayed or appear ragged at the edges. The fish sometimes rubs against rocks or aquarium decorations, as if to relieve itching or discomfort. In advanced cases, the fish loses appetite, swims abnormally, and remains inactive at the bottom of the tank.

Water temperature that is unsuitable or fluctuates too rapidly also weakens the skin and protective mucus layer.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The aquatic veterinarian examines the appearance of the skin lesions and the fish's overall condition. A mucus or tissue sample may be taken to identify the bacterium responsible through microscopic examination or culture. Water testing of the aquarium or pond is an integral part of the evaluation, as water parameters are often the underlying cause of the problem.
Treatment

Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can deepen and spread to muscle or internal organs. Septicemia—the spread of bacteria throughout the body—can develop and threaten the fish's life. Untreated skin lesions also open the door to secondary infections, particularly fungal ones.
