The main sign is a dry, hoarse, persistent cough, sometimes followed by a scraping sound or vomiting. You may also notice a slight runny nose, sneezing and a drop in energy. Fever and loss of appetite are rare but possible in more severe forms.

When to consult without delay

This list does not replace veterinary advice. It gathers situations that justify a prompt consultation.

Causes and risk factors

This disease often results from a combination of several infectious agents, including viruses and bacteria such as Bordetella bronchiseptica. The combination of several agents makes the infection more contagious and sometimes more severe.

Dogs living in communities, such as in boarding houses, shelters or exhibitions, are particularly exposed. Puppies, elderly or immunocompromised dogs, as well as those exposed to stress or a poorly ventilated environment, are at increased risk.

Transmission

The disease is mainly transmitted through the air, via respiratory droplets emitted when coughing or sneezing. Close contact between dogs, particularly in kennels, boarding facilities or exhibitions, promotes its rapid spread.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

1

If your dog has persistent cough or unusual signs, it is important to consult a veterinarian for appropriate advice. Only he will be able to assess the seriousness of the situation and offer appropriate treatment.

Prevention

Regular vaccination against the main causative agents is the most effective means of prevention. It is also advisable to avoid contact with sick dogs and to maintain good hygiene in collective living areas.
