Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. In the margay, a small wild feline from Central and South America, it has been documented mainly in the wild or in captivity in areas where the parasite circulates.

Leishmaniasis is caused by a protozoan of the genus Leishmania. This parasite is transmitted by the bite of a small flying insect, the sandfly, which is active especially at dusk and at night.

The sand fly becomes infected by biting an animal already carrying the parasite, then transmits it to another animal during a subsequent bite.

The margay can be one host among others in the natural cycle of the parasite, alongside other wild or domestic mammals present in its environment.

Living in an area where sandflies are present and active constitutes the main risk factor.

Prolonged exposure outdoors, particularly at dusk or at night, increases the risk of infectious bites.

A weakened immune system, for example during significant stress, concomitant illness or in an elderly animal, favors the evolution towards a more marked clinical form.
