Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in the margay, a small wild feline from Central and South America sometimes housed in captivity in zoos or conservation centers. \nThese parasites live in the intestine of the animal and feed at its expense, causing progressive wear and tear to its general condition. \nAs with other felines, the most common roundworms are roundworms (Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina) and sometimes hookworms (Ancylostoma spp.). \nThis parasitosis particularly affects young animals and people living in insufficient hygienic conditions.

The signs depend on the level of infestation. \nA lightly parasitized margay may show no visible symptoms. \nIn case of a larger infestation, we observe diarrhea sometimes tinged with blood, occasional vomiting, a swollen stomach (especially in young people), loss of appetite or on the contrary an increased appetite without weight gain. \nThe coat becomes dull and the animal gradually loses weight. \nWhole worms, resembling whitish spaghetti, may sometimes be visible in stools or vomit. \nIn young margays, growth retardation is possible in the event of a severe and long-standing infestation.

Causes and risk factors
Infestation occurs by ingestion of parasite eggs present in the environment (soil, soiled litter), by consumption of infested prey (rodents, birds) which are part of the margay's natural diet, or by transmission from the mother to the young during gestation or breastfeeding for certain roundworms. \nThe larvae then migrate through the body before settling in the intestine where they become adults and lay eggs which are passed in the stools, maintaining the cycle of contamination.
Young animals are the most vulnerable because their immune systems are still immature. \nLife in captivity in a poorly cleaned environment encourages the accumulation of parasitic eggs. \nA diet based on live prey or uncontrolled raw meat increases the risk of ingesting parasites. \nStress, an unbalanced diet or a concomitant illness can weaken the animal's defenses and worsen the infestation.
Transmission
Ingestion of eggs present in the environment, consumption of infested prey, mother-to-cub transmission for certain roundworms.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on the clinical examination of the animal and especially on a coproscopic analysis, that is to say the examination of the stools under a microscope to look for parasite eggs. \nThis examination makes it possible to identify the type of worms involved and to assess the intensity of the infestation. \nIn certain cases, an additional blood test may be carried out to check the general impact on the body, particularly in the event of suspected anemia.
Treatment
Treatment is based on the administration of a broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent, active against nematodes, prescribed and adapted by the veterinarian according to the weight and condition of the animal. \nNutritional support can be combined in the event of marked weight loss. \nTreatment must always be carried out under veterinary supervision, as handling a wild feline requires special restraint or sedation precautions.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular veterinary control of stools allows early detection of the presence of parasites. \nA suitable deworming program, established by a veterinarian specializing in exotic animals, is recommended for margays in captivity. \nFrequent cleaning of the enclosure, rapid elimination of stools and good food management (controlled meat, prey from healthy farms) greatly reduce the risk of contamination. \nQuarantine and parasitological examination of new animals before their integration into a group are also useful measures in conservation centers.
Possible complications
A massive and untreated infestation can lead to anemia due to chronic digestive losses, dehydration linked to persistent diarrhea, severe growth retardation in young animals, or even intestinal obstruction in the event of a very high parasitic load. \nThe general weakening of the animal can also make it more susceptible to other infections.

Persistent or bloody diarrhea.
Repeated vomiting.
Visible weight loss despite a preserved appetite.
Presence of worms in stools or vomit.
Abnormally swollen stomach in a young margay.
Dejection associated with prolonged loss of appetite.
Transmission to humans
Certain cat roundworms such as Toxocara cati can theoretically be transmitted to humans by accidental ingestion of eggs present in the contaminated environment, causing toxocariasis. \nThe risk remains limited with good hygiene practices, in particular hand washing after handling potentially contaminated litter or soil, and mainly concerns healthcare personnel in direct contact with animals or their environment.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when the infestation is detected early and treated appropriately. \nHeavily parasitized young animals and complicated cases of anemia or dehydration require more careful management, but the evolution remains favorable in the majority of situations with regular veterinary monitoring.

Can the margay transmit these worms to humans?
The risk exists theoretically with certain roundworms such as Toxocara cati, but it remains low if basic hygiene rules are respected, in particular washing hands after contact with the litter or enclosure.
How do I know if my margay has roundworms?
Only a stool analysis carried out by a veterinarian can confirm the presence of parasites. The presence of visible worms in the stool is a strong sign but their absence does not rule out an infestation.
