White Spot Disease is a serious viral infection affecting crayfish and many other freshwater and marine crustaceans, such as shrimp and crabs. It is caused by a virus called WSSV (White Spot Syndrome Virus). This disease is feared worldwide because it can kill nearly an entire population of crustaceans within days. It represents a serious threat to aquaculture and wild crayfish populations. There is no curative treatment, making prevention essential.

The most distinctive sign is the appearance of small white spots, round or irregular in shape, visible under the shell, particularly on the cephalothorax (front part of the body). These spots correspond to abnormal deposits of calcium salts in the shell.

Affected crayfish often become lethargic, stop feeding and move abnormally, sometimes spinning in circles or remaining motionless at the bottom of the water.

Some may display an unusually reddish coloration of the body.

Mortality can occur very rapidly, sometimes within days of the first signs appearing, and can affect a large number of individuals in the same tank or water body.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by WSSV, a DNA virus belonging to the family Nimaviridae. This virus infects tissues of ectodermal and mesodermal origin in the crayfish, notably the epidermis under the shell, which explains the appearance of the characteristic white spots.

Stress, sudden changes in water temperature, poor water quality, and high stocking density increase crayfish susceptibility to infection and accelerate disease progression. Introduction of new animals without quarantine is a major risk factor for virus entry into an unaffected farm or water body.

Transmission

The virus spreads very easily through direct contact between infected and healthy animals, via contaminated water, through ingestion of infected carcasses or tissues (including through cannibalism), and via contaminated farming equipment (nets, tanks, transfer water). Aquatic birds and other vectors can also disperse the virus from one water body to another. The virus can also be introduced through the purchase of asymptomatic carrier animals or contaminated live food.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Presumptive diagnosis is based on observation of clinical signs (white spots, rapid and massive mortality). Confirmation requires specialized laboratory testing, particularly molecular biology tests (PCR) performed on tissue samples collected by a veterinarian or an accredited aquaculture pathology laboratory.

Treatment

There is no specific antiviral treatment that can cure infected crayfish. Management consists essentially of isolating suspect animals, reducing stress, optimizing water quality, and applying the sanitary measures required by competent authorities in case of a confirmed outbreak, which may extend to culling of affected populations to prevent spread.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention relies above all on biosecurity measures: systematic quarantine of any new animal before introduction into a tank or aquarium, disinfection of farming equipment, control of animal origin and live food sources, and regular monitoring of crayfish health status.

It is essential never to release crayfish or discharge farming water into the natural environment, in order to prevent virus spread to wild populations.

In certain countries, the disease is notifiable to the competent veterinary or health authorities due to its economic and ecological impact.

Possible complications

Massive and rapid mortality of the entire stock or affected population is the main complication. The disease may also promote secondary bacterial infections in weakened animals before death.
