Crayfish plague, also called aphanomycosis, is a disease caused by a filamentous microorganism resembling a fungus, called Aphanomyces astaci. This agent belongs to a group known as oomycetes, sometimes called "water molds."\n\nThis disease is feared because it affects almost exclusively crayfish and can wipe out entire populations within a few weeks. It is listed among notifiable diseases that must be reported to animal health authorities in many countries.\n\nCrayfish native to North America, such as the red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), are healthy carriers: they harbor the fungus without dying from it. In contrast, European crayfish such as the noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) are highly susceptible and almost always die once infected.

It may remain lying on its back or side without being able to turn over.\n\nTrembling of the legs may occur, along with progressive loss of activity: the crayfish becomes abnormally calm then immobile.\n\nBrownish or blackish spots may appear on the carapace, corresponding to areas where the fungus has penetrated the tissues. These spots are not always visible to the naked eye.\n\nIn wild or farmed populations, the most striking sign is often rapid and massive mortality, sometimes within days to weeks, affecting the majority of individuals present.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by Aphanomyces astaci, an aquatic oomycete. This microorganism produces swimming spores capable of moving through water to find a new host.\n\nOnce a spore encounters a crayfish, it attaches to the carapace, particularly at thin areas such as joints, and germinates to form filaments that penetrate the underlying tissues. The fungus then invades the muscles and nervous system, which explains the coordination disturbances observed.
The main risk factor is the presence of North American crayfish in the same waterway or pond that are healthy carriers of the disease.
Transporting equipment or water between different water bodies without disinfection promotes spread. High stocking density in farming also increases the speed at which the disease spreads through a population.
Stress, poor water quality, or significant temperature fluctuations can weaken crayfish and make infection easier.
Transmission
Transmission occurs primarily through water, via swimming spores released by infected crayfish, whether alive or dead.\n\nDirect contact between crayfish also plays a role, as does the movement of contaminated material (nets, boots, tanks, transport water) from one site to another.\n\nNorth American crayfish introduced to Europe and elsewhere are the primary reservoir of the fungus: they carry it without developing the disease and contaminate the aquatic environments they colonize.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
There is no simple test that can be performed at home. Diagnosis relies on specialized laboratory analysis, particularly detection of the fungal genetic material using molecular biology techniques, or direct observation of the pathogen on shell samples.
These analyses are usually carried out by specialized veterinary or aquaculture laboratories, as the disease is subject to regulatory monitoring in several countries.
Treatment
There is no recognized and effective curative treatment for crayfish already infected in the wild or in extensive farming systems.
In experimental settings or controlled aquarium conditions, some antifungal products have been studied, but their use remains limited, poorly standardized, and does not guarantee recovery once deep tissues are invaded.
Management of the disease therefore relies essentially on prevention and sanitary measures aimed at preventing spread rather than treating affected animals.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies above all on strict biosecurity measures: never transfer crayfish, water, or equipment from one pond or waterway to another without precautions.
It is recommended to disinfect all equipment (nets, dip nets, boots) that has been in contact with an aquatic environment before using it elsewhere.
Avoiding the introduction of crayfish from unknown origins or exotic species into a farm or water body is essential. Any new crayfish should ideally undergo an observation period before being placed with other animals.
Promptly reporting any abnormal deaths to the relevant authorities helps limit spread to other sites.
Possible complications
In susceptible species, the disease most often progresses to the death of the animal within a few days to a few weeks after infection.
At the level of a population or farm, the major complication is complete collapse of the stock, with significant ecological consequences when protected local species are affected.
