Neurological problems frequently appear: the snake may hold its head tilted to one side, move in abnormal circles, lose balance, or display uncontrolled "corkscrew" movements of the body.
Tremors, inability to right itself properly, or even convulsions may occur in advanced stages.
Behavior also changes: lethargy, lack of interest in the surroundings, or sometimes unusual restlessness.
Unlike in pythons, digestive signs and weight loss in boas are sometimes more pronounced than nervous system problems, at least initially.

Causes and risk factors
The disease results from infection with an arenavirus, a virus that specifically infects certain snakes.
The virus settles in cells throughout many organs (liver, kidneys, nervous system, blood cells) where it forms characteristic inclusions.
Several viral strains exist, with varying degrees of severity depending on the case and the snake species affected.
Direct or indirect contact with an already infected snake is the primary risk factor.
Snake mites (small external parasites) are strongly suspected of playing a role in virus transmission between individuals.
Shared enclosure equipment without disinfection (tanks, forceps, cleaning tools) can also spread the disease.
A collection housing multiple snakes in the same space, or introducing a new animal without quarantine, increases the risk of contamination.
Stress, weakened immunity, or poor husbandry conditions do not cause the disease but may trigger its clinical signs in an animal already carrying the virus.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through direct contact between snakes, and likely through mites that feed on successive animals.
Contaminated husbandry equipment (enclosures, décor, tools) can also transmit the virus if not properly disinfected between terrariums.
Transmission from mother to offspring is also possible but remains less well documented in boas.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Management remains supportive only: assisted feeding if there is severe loss of appetite, pain management, mite control if present, and comfort care tailored to the animal's condition.
In some advanced cases with significant neurological signs and uncontrollable suffering, the veterinarian may discuss euthanasia with the owner for humane reasons.

Prevention
Strict quarantine of any new snake before introduction into an existing collection is the most important measure.
This quarantine should last several months, with careful monitoring and, ideally, testing performed by a reptile veterinarian.

Systematically disinfecting equipment between each enclosure, using dedicated tools for each animal, and washing hands between handlings limits disease spread.

The disease may progress to severe and irreversible neurological impairment, leaving the animal unable to feed itself or move normally.
Secondary infections can develop as a result of the animal's overall decline.
