Infectious stomatitis, often called “rotten mouth,” is an infection of the oral mucosa common in snakes, including the Montpellier snake. \n\nIt corresponds to inflammation of the mouth caused by opportunistic bacteria which take advantage of a weakening of the animal or a small injury to develop. \n\nThis disease affects both wild animals and those held in captivity, but it is more often observed in stressed or poorly cared for captive snakes.

The first signs are often discreet: the snake salivates more than usual and seems less interested in its food. \n\nWhen looking at the mouth, we can see redness, small sores or yellowish to whitish pus-like deposits on the gums and palate. \n\nAn unpleasant odor may emerge from the animal's mouth. \n\nIn more advanced forms, the mouth may remain slightly open, the tissues swell, and the animal has difficulty grasping or swallowing its prey. \n\nGeneral depression and gradual weight loss often accompany untreated cases.

Causes and risk factors
Infectious stomatitis is most often caused by bacteria naturally present in the snake's mouth, which become pathogenic when the animal's defenses are weakened. \n\nVarious bacterial genera may be involved, including Gram-negative bacilli commonly found in the terrarium environment. \n\nA small oral injury, for example from a bite of live prey or rubbing against the walls of the terrarium, can provide an entry point for infection.
The stress linked to poorly adapted captivity is a major risk factor: inadequate temperature, incorrect humidity, lack of hiding places. \n\nInsufficient hygiene of the terrarium promotes bacterial proliferation. \n\nFeeding live prey increases the risk of oral injuries during capture. \n\nAny weakening of the immune system, due to underlying disease, poor nutrition or parasites, makes the animal more vulnerable.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian carefully examines the snake's oral cavity to assess the extent of the lesions. \n\nA sample of oral secretions can be taken to identify the bacteria involved and guide the choice of treatment. \n\nAdditional examinations, such as a blood test or an x-ray, may be offered if the infection appears to have spread or if the animal's general condition is worrying.
Treatment
Treatment is mainly based on local cleaning of oral lesions and the application of antiseptic products. \n\nAntibiotic treatment, adapted to the results of the samples, is often necessary to control the infection. \n\nIn cases where the tissues are very damaged, surgical debridement of the necrotic areas can be carried out by the veterinarian. \n\nImproved captivity conditions and nutritional support are an integral part of care.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Maintaining captivity conditions adapted to the species (temperature, humidity, size of the terrarium) greatly reduces stress and the risk of disease. \n\nPreferring dead or correctly presented prey limits oral injuries. \n\nRegular cleaning of the terrarium and equipment reduces the bacterial load in the environment. \n\nRegular monitoring of the animal's mouth allows any abnormalities to be detected early.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can spread to the jaw bones and cause irreversible deformities. \n\nIt can also spread to the respiratory tract or spread throughout the body, becoming life-threatening. \n\nDifficulty eating due to oral pain leads to weight loss which can worsen the animal's general condition.

Excessive salivation or mouth hanging open abnormally.
Presence of whitish or yellowish deposits, redness or small sores in the mouth.
Refusal to eat for a prolonged period.
Unusual smell coming from the animal's mouth.

The prognosis is favorable if the disease is detected and treated early, before the infection extends deep into the tissues. \n\nIn the event of late treatment, healing is longer and uncertain, with a risk of after-effects in the jaw.

Is infectious stomatitis contagious between snakes?
It is not directly contagious like a viral disease, but the responsible bacteria can be transmitted by contact or via a contaminated shared environment, particularly in common terrariums.
Can you treat a rotten mouth yourself at home?
No, it is not recommended to treat this condition alone. A veterinary consultation is necessary to assess the severity and adapt the treatment, because inappropriate management can worsen the infection.
How long does the treatment last?
The duration varies depending on the severity of the lesions, ranging from a few weeks for mild cases to several months for advanced infections that have affected the bones.
Can a wild Montpellier snake develop this disease?
