Intestinal parasitism by nematodes is a very common condition in snakes, including the Montpellier snake. These roundworms live in the digestive tract of the reptile and feed at its expense. In captivity as in the wild, a light infestation can go unnoticed, but a significant parasitic load weakens the animal and can cause serious digestive problems. Diagnosis and treatment are the responsibility of a veterinarian specializing in reptiles.

The signs are often subtle at first. We may observe a decrease in appetite or refusal of food, progressive weight loss despite an apparently normal diet, regurgitation after meals or occasional vomiting. Stools may become soft, more frequent or contain worms visible to the naked eye, sometimes fine and whitish. The animal may appear depressed, less active, and have a slightly swollen belly. In young snakes, growth retardation is possible. In severe cases, dehydration or a marked state of weakness may set in.

Causes and risk factors
The infestation is due to various intestinal nematodes (notably roundworms, pinworms or strongyles specific to reptiles) which colonize the stomach or intestine. Contamination most often occurs by ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment, in contaminated water, or by consumption of prey that itself carries parasites (intermediate hosts such as certain insects, rodents or amphibians).
Snakes kept in captivity in insufficient hygienic conditions, an overcrowded terrarium, poorly maintained substrate or contaminated bathing water are at greater risk. Stress, an unsuitable diet, poorly controlled temperature or humidity weaken natural defenses and encourage the multiplication of parasites. Wild animals recently captured or newly introduced to a farm often have a higher parasite load.
Transmission
Transmission occurs by the fecal-oral route: the snake ingests eggs or larvae present in its environment (substrate, water, poorly cleaned terrarium) or through infested prey. A direct (without intermediate host) or indirect (via prey) cycle is possible depending on the type of nematode.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian makes the diagnosis by examining the stool under a microscope (coproscopy), allowing nematode eggs to be identified. A complete clinical examination assesses the animal's general condition, hydration and weight. In certain cases, additional examinations such as an x-ray or an endoscopy may be offered to assess the extent of the infestation or look for complications.
Treatment
Treatment is based on the administration of antiparasitics specific to reptiles, prescribed and dosed only by a veterinarian, because the safety margin in snakes is narrow. Nutritional support and rehydration may be combined in case of weakness. A stool check after treatment is generally necessary to verify effectiveness and the absence of recurrence.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular and rigorous cleaning of the terrarium, with disinfection of the substrate and accessories, greatly limits the risk. It is recommended to quarantine any new animal before introducing it with other reptiles, and to have a stool analysis (coproscopy) carried out upon arrival. Avoiding feeding with uncontrolled wild prey also reduces the risk of contamination. Routine parasitic control, once or twice a year according to the veterinarian's recommendations, allows early detection.
Possible complications
A massive, untreated infestation can lead to intestinal obstruction, digestive perforation, severe nutrient malabsorption and general weakening which can lead to death, particularly in young individuals or already weakened animals.

Persistent diarrhea or abnormal stools
Marked depression or unusual lethargy

Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when the infestation is detected early and treated appropriately. In the absence of treatment, particularly in an already weakened animal, the prognosis can become guarded due to possible digestive complications.
Frequently asked questions
Can a healthy Montpellier snake have worms?
Yes, a low parasite load is common and often without visible consequences. It is the increase in the number of parasites that becomes problematic for the health of the animal.
Can we see worms with the naked eye?
Some adult nematodes or fragments may be visible in the stool, but the eggs are only detectable under a microscope during a coproscopy performed by a veterinarian.
Is intestinal parasitism transmissible to humans?
Nematodes specific to snakes are generally not transmissible to humans, but good hygiene after handling the terrarium is still recommended.
Should we systematically treat all the snakes in the terrarium?
In the event of a confirmed infestation in an individual living with other snakes, the veterinarian often assesses the benefit of examining or treating the entire group to avoid recontamination.
