Metabolic bone disease (MBD) is a very common condition in captive-bred Ocellated lizards (Timon lepidus). It results from a lasting imbalance between calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D3 in the reptile's body. This imbalance forces the body to draw calcium from the bones to maintain a normal level in the blood. The bones gradually become weaker, deformed, and painful. It is a slow-developing disease that often goes unnoticed by the owner until an advanced stage.

Early signs are subtle: the lizard moves less, appears fatigued, or eats poorly. Over time, movement becomes difficult, with a stiff or limping gait, and sometimes swelling of the legs or lower jaw (rubber jaw). In advanced cases, bones may become visibly deformed, particularly the spine and limbs. Muscle tremors or spasms may occur when blood calcium drops very low. The animal may refuse to move due to severe pain, or may suffer spontaneous fractures from even gentle handling.

Causes and risk factors

The main cause is insufficient dietary calcium, excess phosphorus, or especially a deficiency in active vitamin D3. In the Ocellated lizard, a highly heliophilic species needing plenty of sunlight, vitamin D3 is normally synthesized by the skin through ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Inadequate lighting without effective UVB prevents this synthesis even if diet is correct. An imbalance in the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in prey (unsupplemented insects in particular) is also a major cause.

Absent or poor-quality UVB lighting (old lamp, poor positioning, glass or mesh filtering UV rays). Diet based only on unsupplemented insects. Lack of calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation. Young growing animals, which are more vulnerable as their needs are proportionally higher. Breeding females, whose calcium requirements increase significantly during egg-laying.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian reviews the husbandry history (type of lighting, diet, supplementation) and performs a physical examination of the animal.

Blood testing may be performed to measure calcium and phosphorus levels, although this remains technically challenging in small lizards.

Treatment

Management focuses on correcting the environment and diet: installing or replacing UVB lighting, and providing calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation under veterinary supervision.

In severe cases, medical treatment may be needed to stabilize blood calcium levels, given by injection or mouth depending on severity.

Nutritional support and sometimes pain relief may be added.

Rest and limiting handling are essential while bones remain fragile.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Install quality UVB lighting appropriate for diurnal, sun-loving reptiles, positioned without obstruction between the lamp and the animal, and replaced regularly according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Routinely dust insects with calcium before feeding them to the lizard.

Vary the diet and occasionally offer vitamin D3 according to the advice of a veterinarian who specializes in reptiles.

Provide access to a warm zone (basking spot) that enables proper digestion and nutrient absorption.

Possible complications

Spontaneous fractures, permanent deformities of the spine or limbs, breathing difficulty if the rib cage is deformed.

In severe cases, seizures or paralysis may occur due to abnormally low blood calcium levels.

When to see a veterinarian

The lizard moves less than usual or appears tired without apparent reason.

Movement becomes stiff, limping, or hesitant.

The lower jaw appears soft or deformed.

Tremors, spasms, or inability to stand appear.

Visible deformity of the legs or spine is noticed.

The animal refuses food for several days.

Prognosis

Prognosis depends on the disease stage when diagnosed.

Detected early, metabolic bone disease can be stabilized and partially reversed through prompt correction of lighting and diet.

At an advanced stage, bone deformities are usually permanent, but the animal may still live comfortably with appropriate care. Very severe cases with multiple fractures or breathing problems carry a more guarded prognosis.

Does the ocellated lizard really need UVB in captivity?

Yes, absolutely. It's a very sun-loving species that, in the wild, spends long periods exposed to sunlight. Without quality UVB, it cannot synthesize the vitamin D3 necessary for calcium absorption.

Can a well-fed lizard still develop this disease?

Yes, if UVB lighting is absent or of poor quality, even a correct calcium diet is insufficient, because the vitamin D3 necessary for its absorption is lacking.

Can bone deformities disappear with treatment?

Already established deformities are generally permanent, but early intervention can halt progression and significantly improve the animal's quality of life.

How to know if your UVB lighting is still effective?

UVB tubes lose their effectiveness over time even if they still emit light normally. It is recommended to replace them according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically several times per year.
