Intestinal roundworm (nematode) parasitism is a very common condition in the ocellated lizard (Timon lepidus), whether wild or kept in captivity (terrarium). These parasites live in the reptile's intestines and feed at its expense. In a healthy, well-fed animal, a light parasite load is often tolerated without visible signs. However, in a stressed, young, or weakened animal, the infestation can become severe and cause significant digestive disease, sometimes life-threatening.

Signs are often subtle at first. Progressive weight loss may be observed despite maintained appetite, or conversely, a marked loss of appetite. Stools become soft, sometimes liquid, and may contain roundworms—whitish, thread-like, either still alive or dead.

The belly may appear swollen or distended. The animal becomes lethargic, hides more often, and loses its usual alertness. In severe cases, vomiting, dehydration, and marked weight loss appear and can lead to death if left untreated.

In young ocellated lizards, intestinal parasitism is a major cause of stunted growth and mortality.

Causes and risk factors

Several species of roundworms (nematodes) can infect the ocellated lizard's intestines, particularly pinworms and ascarids specific to reptiles. These worms shed eggs that are passed in feces, then ingested by the same animal or a companion through contact with contaminated soil, food bowls, or substrate. The cycle continues as long as the environment remains unclean.

Overcrowding in the enclosure, poor hygiene of the tank (soiled substrate, uncleaned food bowls), stress, unbalanced diet, and inappropriate temperature or humidity favor parasite multiplication. Young animals, recently captured from the wild, or newly acquired from breeders or pet shops are at particular risk. Housing multiple lizards together increases the risk of ongoing reinfection.

Transmission

Transmission occurs through the fecal-oral route: accidental ingestion of eggs present in feces, on substrate, in food bowls, or through contact with contaminated surfaces in the terrarium.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

A reptile veterinarian diagnoses the condition through coproscopy, a microscopic examination of feces to detect worm eggs. The diagnosis may also be supported by direct observation of worms in the feces, the animal's history (origin, diet, living conditions), and a complete clinical examination including abdominal palpation. In some cases, additional tests (blood work, ultrasound) may be recommended to assess the overall impact on the animal.

Treatment

Treatment consists of administering an antiparasitic drug suitable for reptiles, prescribed and dosed by the veterinarian according to body weight and worm species identified. Fecal recheck after treatment is often recommended to confirm effectiveness. Supportive care (rehydration, appropriate diet) may be needed if the animal is significantly weakened. Complete enclosure cleaning must accompany medical treatment to prevent reinfection.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Regular fecal examination (coproscopy) — at least once or twice yearly — allows detection of infestation before signs appear. Any new animal introduced to the enclosure should be checked before contact with other lizards.

Strict enclosure hygiene is essential: regular substrate cleaning, disinfection of water and food bowls, prompt removal of feces. Maintaining temperature and humidity conditions suited to the species strengthens the animal's natural defenses against parasites.

Possible complications

Heavy untreated infestation can cause intestinal obstruction, severe dehydration, extreme weight loss, and particularly in young animals, death. Chronic parasitism also weakens the body and increases vulnerability to other infections.

Visible worms in the feces.

Persistent diarrhea or abnormal feces lasting several days.

Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite.

Abdominal bloating or distension.

Lethargy or behavioral changes.

Any new animal introduced to the enclosure, before contact with other lizards.

Prognosis

The outlook is generally good when the infestation is caught and treated early, combined with improved terrarium hygiene. However, a heavy infestation that goes untreated, especially in a young animal that is already weakened, can become serious and may be life-threatening.

Frequently asked questions

Can an ocellated lizard have worms without showing any symptoms?

Yes, that's common. A low parasite burden is often well tolerated by a healthy animal. This is why regular fecal examination is useful even in the absence of visible signs.

Are these worms transmissible to humans or other domestic animals?

Intestinal nematodes in ocellated lizards are generally specific to reptiles and do not transmit to humans or domestic mammals. It is nevertheless always recommended to wash your hands after handling the terrarium.

Should you treat all the lizards in the terrarium if only one is infested?

It is often recommended, as worm eggs spread easily in a shared environment. The veterinarian assesses each case individually based on the test results of each animal.

How long does it take to get completely rid of worms?
