This band is actually a complex mat of microorganisms—bacteria, cyanobacteria, and other microbes—that destroys the coral's living tissue as it progresses, leaving behind the bare limestone skeleton. This disease is considered one of the most destructive threats to coral reefs worldwide.

The most distinctive sign is a black, dark brown, or reddish band crossing the coral's surface, separating healthy living tissue from the white, bare skeleton left behind. This band can range from a few millimetres to several centimetres wide. It typically advances slowly, progressing at a rate of a few millimetres per day, though the speed varies depending on water temperature and the species affected. Tissue just ahead of the band may appear pale or discolored. Over time, the colony loses an increasing amount of its living surface, resulting in visible decline: color loss, smaller polyps, and a dull appearance of the colony.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by a microbial consortium—a community of several microorganisms working together rather than a single pathogen. Filamentous cyanobacteria form the band's structure, associated with sulfate-reducing and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria that create toxic conditions (lack of oxygen and harmful sulfur compounds) at the interface with the coral tissue. This microenvironment progressively destroys the coral's cells as the band advances across the colony.

High water temperature or temperature shifts outside normal ranges promote disease development. Nutrient-rich water from pollution, agricultural runoff, or urban inputs also increases risk. Stress from other injuries, such as physical damage, sediment exposure, intense light, or proximity to diseased colonies, makes corals more vulnerable. Certain hard coral species appear more susceptible than others, and high colony density in the same area can favour disease spread.

Transmission

The microbial band can spread from polyp to polyp within the same colony, and also transmit to neighboring colonies through direct contact, by ocean currents carrying fragments of the band, or via organisms that move between corals—such as fish and grazing invertebrates.

Samples can be analysed in the laboratory to identify the microbial composition of the band and confirm this disease rather than another coral condition with similar appearance.

No validated medication exists for large-scale use in natural environments. In controlled settings (aquariums, rearing facilities), certain physical interventions such as mechanical removal of the band or isolation of the affected area can slow progression. Trials using localised antibacterial compounds have been reported in scientific literature, but their use remains the sole domain of supervised specialists, due to risks for the surrounding ecosystem.

Prevention

No guaranteed prevention method exists in natural settings. Useful measures focus on reducing pollution sources and nutrient input in coastal waters, regular monitoring of reefs and red coral farming areas, and rapid isolation of affected colonies when possible, especially in aquaculture or rearing tanks. Avoiding handling that damages colonies also limits entry points for the micro-organisms responsible for the disease.

Possible complications

Band progression can cause complete death of the colony if it reaches all living tissue. Tissue destruction also weakens the calcareous skeleton, making it more vulnerable to erosion and colonisation by opportunistic organisms. At reef scale, an outbreak of this disease can substantially reduce coral diversity and density.
