Coral white syndrome, also called white band disease depending on its form, affects many species of hard and soft corals, including gorgonians such as red coral (Corallium rubrum). The condition causes progressive loss of living coral tissue, exposing the underlying white limestone skeleton, bare and lifeless. This can affect a small part of the colony or the entire colony within weeks. It is considered one of the main causes of decline in coral reefs and gorgonian populations in the Mediterranean and elsewhere in the world.

The most visible sign is the appearance of a distinct white band or zone corresponding to the exposed limestone skeleton after death and separation of living tissues. This white zone typically progresses steadily, often starting from the base or a point on the colony and moving toward the branch tips. Healthy tissue remaining nearby may appear normal, creating a sharply marked progression 'front'. In red coral and gorgonians, partial exposure of branches is sometimes seen, with areas of exposed skeleton subsequently colonized by algae or other organisms. Depending on progression speed, two forms are distinguished: slow-progressing forms and rapid-progressing forms that destroy the colony within days to weeks.

Causes and risk factors

White syndromes actually group together several diseases that look similar but whose precise causes are not always identified with certainty. Opportunistic bacteria, particularly some species of the genus Vibrio, are frequently associated with affected tissues, but it is not always proven that they are the initial cause rather than a secondary infection taking advantage of an already weakened coral. Thermal stress, particularly abnormal warming episodes of seawater, is a triggering factor very often involved, weakening the coral's natural defenses and promoting the multiplication of pathogenic microorganisms.

Marine heat waves and prolonged thermal anomalies are the main documented risk factor, particularly in the Mediterranean where episodes of mass mortality in red coral and sea fans have been linked to exceptionally warm summers. Poor water quality, rich in organic matter or polluted, also encourages the development of opportunistic bacteria. High colony density, proximity to already affected areas, and mechanical injuries (anchor dragging, fishing nets, disrespectful diving) can facilitate entry of pathogens. Stress from stagnant or poorly circulated water, which is also relevant in reef aquariums, is an aggravating factor.

Transmission

Transmission from one colony to another is suspected in some cases, possibly through direct contact or through seawater containing opportunistic bacteria, but this transmission mode is not confirmed for all forms grouped under this name.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

There is no single simple test to definitively confirm white syndrome; diagnosis relies mainly on direct observation of the bleached and exposed tissue progression, ideally followed over time by a specialist or experienced aquarist. In laboratory or research settings, tissue samples can be analyzed to look for associated bacteria, but these analyses remain primarily used in a scientific context rather than for an individual coral in an aquarium.

Treatment

There is no validated and reliable curative treatment to restore already lost tissue. In reef aquariums, some hobbyists attempt colony fragmentation (cutting away the healthy part to separate it from the affected zone) combined with immediate improvement of water parameters, in order to halt progression. Localized antibacterial treatments, reserved for experienced professionals, are sometimes used in aquariums but their effectiveness is not guaranteed and they carry risks for the tank ecosystem.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

In natural environments, prevention mainly relies on limiting additional sources of stress: preserving water quality, reducing coastal pollution, supervising diving and fishing activities in sensitive areas, and monitoring at-risk zones during periods of high heat. In reef aquariums, it is essential to maintain stable, well-oxygenated water with low nitrogen compounds, avoid sharp fluctuations in parameters, and quarantine any new coral before introducing it into an established tank. Good water circulation and regular removal of organic debris limit bacterial proliferation.

Possible complications

Progression of white syndrome can result in complete death of the colony if the destruction front reaches all living tissue. The exposed skeleton quickly becomes colonized by algae, sponges, or other competing organisms, which prevents any recolonization by the coral. At the scale of a reef or sea fan community, large-scale white syndrome episodes can lead to lasting decline in local biodiversity and the services provided by the coral ecosystem.

Prognosis

The prognosis depends heavily on how quickly the bleaching progresses and how much tissue has already been lost at the time of detection. Slow progression detected early and isolated by fragmentation can sometimes be halted, leaving part of the colony to survive. Rapidly progressive forms, however, carry a poor prognosis, with total colony loss possible within days to weeks. In the wild, recovery of an entire population after a massive bleaching event is slow, taking several years, because of the very slow growth rate of red coral and sea fans.

Is white syndrome of coral contagious between colonies in the same aquarium?

Some observations suggest possible transmission between nearby colonies, particularly through water or direct contact, but the exact mechanism is not fully established for all forms of the syndrome. As a precaution, it is recommended to isolate an affected colony promptly.

Can a red coral colony that has been affected be saved?

This depends on the speed of progression and how early detection occurs. Rapid removal of the still-healthy part, combined with improved husbandry conditions, sometimes offers a chance to save part of the colony, but there is no guarantee.

Does climate warming have a link with this syndrome?

Yes, numerous episodes of white syndrome at sea, particularly in the Mediterranean, have coincided with marine heat waves, suggesting an important role for thermal stress in triggering the disease.

Should you treat the entire aquarium water if one colony is affected?
