The hard clam (Donax trunculus) is a small burrowing shellfish highly valued on Tunisian coasts, particularly around the Gulf of Gabès. Like other filter-feeding bivalve mollusks, it can be affected by bacterial diseases, especially vibriosis caused by bacteria of the Vibrio genus. These infections primarily affect larvae and young hard clams in hatcheries and natural spat collection areas, but adult mortality can also occur during unfavorable environmental conditions. Vibriosis represents one of the main causes of mass mortality in farmed and wild-caught bivalve mollusks worldwide.

In hard clams, disease signs are difficult to observe directly due to the animal's small size and burrowing lifestyle in sand.

Warning signs for professionals and harvesters are mainly indirect: abnormally high and rapid mortality in a batch or fishing area, weakened shellfish that no longer burrow normally into the sediment, animals that surface from the sand or remain inactive, shells that open easily without resistance, flesh that appears flaccid or discolored when opened.

In hatcheries, abnormal swimming or cessation of larval swimming is observed, along with stunted growth and very high larval mortality rates within days.

Causes and risk factors

Other opportunistic bacteria may also be involved during mortality episodes, often in association with environmental stress or organic pollution.

Several factors promote the emergence of these bacterial diseases: high seawater temperature, particularly during summer peaks, high population density in natural beds or hatcheries, organic pollution and deterioration of coastal water quality, stress from handling, transport or abrupt salinity changes, weakening caused by other pathogens (parasites, viruses) or nutritional deficiency in the environment.

Coastal areas near urban or industrial discharges, as well as periods of high heat, are particularly at risk in Tunisia.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

No diagnosis can be made by eye alone in the clam. When abnormal mortality occurs on a bed or in a hatchery, diagnosis must be confirmed by a laboratory specialized in mollusc pathology, which performs bacterial identification (culture, identification of Vibrio strains) from samples of shellfish or larvae. Additional water quality analyses (temperature, salinity, bacterial load) are often carried out. In Tunisia, this type of monitoring is the responsibility of the competent authorities and laboratories for aquatic animal health and sanitary surveillance of fishing areas.

Treatment

There is no curative treatment applicable to wild clam populations. In hatcheries, antibiotics may be used occasionally under veterinary or specialized technical supervision to reduce larval mortality, but their use is regulated and restricted due to the risk of bacterial resistance and environmental release. Management relies primarily on hygiene measures, disinfection and improvement of rearing conditions rather than on systematic drug treatment.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention relies mainly on environmental management and production practices: monitoring water quality in fishing and production areas, respecting authorized fishing periods and zones to avoid overharvesting and population stress, limiting pollutant discharge into sensitive coastal zones, proper handling, storage and transport of shellfish after harvest to minimize thermal stress, and in hatcheries: thorough disinfection of equipment, control of water quality and broodstock, and management of larval stocking densities.

Possible complications

Vibrioses can cause rapid and massive mortality, severely affecting production in hatcheries and potentially reducing the natural stocks available for fishing. These outbreaks have direct economic consequences for fishermen and aquaculture professionals, with a risk of weakening wild populations if outbreaks recur.

When to see a veterinarian

Sudden and significant mortality observed on a clam bed or in a culture lot.

Abnormal behavior of larvae in the hatchery (cessation of swimming, rapid mortality).

Clams that no longer burrow or rise abnormally to the surface of the sand.

Abnormal smell or appearance of the flesh when opened, associated with grouped mortalities.

Transmission to humans

Certain Vibrio species that can contaminate shellfish, such as Vibrio parahaemolyticus or Vibrio vulnificus, cause foodborne illnesses in humans when shellfish are consumed raw or undercooked, or when contaminated by poor water quality. It is recommended to cook clams thoroughly before consumption and to respect authorized and sanitarily controlled fishing areas.

Prognosis

Prognosis depends on the scale of the outbreak and how quickly it is managed. Larval mortality in hatcheries can be very high if no action is taken, but good hygiene practices and water quality management often help limit losses in subsequent outbreaks. In natural environments, populations may recover if fishing pressure and environmental quality are controlled after a mortality event.
