Coquina clams (Donax trunculus) are small burrowing mollusks highly prized on Tunisian coasts, particularly in the Gulf of Gabès. Like many marine bivalve mollusks, they can host small parasitic crustaceans belonging to two groups: copepods and fish lice. These microscopic or very small organisms live attached to the gills, within the mantle or in the pallial cavity of the clam, where they feed on tissues, mucus or fluids from the host. This parasitism is not a disease in the strict sense but an infestation that can weaken the animal, especially when massive or combined with other environmental stress factors.

Infested coquina clams most often show no visible signs to the naked eye, making detection difficult without specialized examination. In cases of heavy infestation, general weakness of the animal may be observed, slower growth than normal, and wasting of the soft body relative to the shell. The gills, when examined in the laboratory, may show abnormal coloring, an irritated appearance, or visible presence of small organisms attached to their surface. A decrease in filtering capacity and therefore in nutrition can result from severe gill damage.

Causes and risk factors
The parasitism is caused by small crustaceans belonging to copepods (often species associated with the gills or mantle of bivalves) and fish lice (small ectoparasitic crustaceans better known in fish but occasionally affecting other aquatic organisms). These parasites colonize the clam by taking advantage of its position in the marine sediment and its filter-feeding mode, which promotes contact with larvae or free-living stages of parasites present in seawater.
Tellina living in areas of high population density, where contact between individuals is frequent, are more exposed. Poor water quality, high organic pollution, or unusual water temperature can promote parasite development and weaken the mollusk's natural defenses. Stress from overfishing, dredging, or sudden changes in salinity can also increase tellina susceptibility to this type of infestation.
Transmission
Transmission occurs in the marine environment through free-living larval stages of copepods and fish lice, which attach to coquina clams present in the sediment, often promoted by high population density and close contact between individuals.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis relies on laboratory examination, usually carried out by a service specializing in mollusk pathology or by a fisheries research institute. Observation is performed under a binocular magnifying glass or microscope following dissection, with particular attention to the gills, mantle, and pallial cavity. Treatment
There is no curative treatment applicable at the individual level for a wild mollusk living in its natural environment. Management is essentially conducted at the population and bed level, through health monitoring and, if necessary, through fishing management or marine environment quality measures.

Prevention
There are no individual prevention measures applicable to a wild mollusk. At the scale of production or fishing areas, good water quality management, regular health monitoring of natural beds, and respect for biological rest periods help reduce overall parasite pressure on tellina populations.
Possible complications
Severe and prolonged infestation can result in general weakening, reduced resistance to other pathogens, and increased mortality if combined with other environmental stress factors, such as pollution or significant thermal variation.
