Dental malocclusion is an abnormality in which the capybara's teeth do not align properly with each other.\n\nAs in many rodents, the capybara's teeth grow continuously throughout its life. Normally, chewing wears down the teeth evenly and maintains an appropriate length.\n\nWhen this alignment is disrupted, the teeth can become too long, grow crooked, or form sharp points that injure the mouth. It is a condition quite frequently encountered in capybaras kept in captivity, particularly when their diet is not suitable.

The first signs are often discreet: the animal eats more slowly, seems to have difficulty chewing, or drops pieces of food.\n\nExcessive salivation may be observed, sometimes with blood if the teeth hurt the mouth.\n\nOver time, progressive weight loss appears as the animal eats less out of pain.\n\nBad breath may develop in the event of an associated oral infection.\n\nIn advanced cases, swelling of the face or jaw may appear, a sign of a dental abscess.\n\nThe animal may also appear more despondent and less active than usual.

Causes and risk factors

Dental malocclusion occurs when the capybara's teeth, which grow throughout life (so-called "continuously growing" teeth), do not wear properly against each other.\n\nThis can come from a poor birth position of the jaws (congenital cause, sometimes hereditary), from old trauma to the jaw, or more often from a diet poor in long fibers which does not allow the natural wear of the teeth through chewing.\n\nA deficiency in calcium or in vitamin D can also weaken the jawbone and promote tooth movement.\n\nIn farms or in captivity, the lack of hay or fibrous plants to chew is the most common cause.

Capybaras fed a diet low in fiber (pellets only, soft vegetables, without hay) are the most exposed.\n\nAnimals from lines carrying congenital jaw malformations present an increased risk.\n\nOld trauma to the face or jaw, a nutritional deficiency in calcium or vitamin D, as well as advanced age are also contributing factors.\n\nCaptivity itself, by modifying the natural eating habits of the chewing, increases the risk compared to wild life.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Treatment

The main treatment consists of regularly filing or shortening excess teeth, a procedure carried out by the veterinarian under sedation or light anesthesia, with suitable dental equipment.\n\nIn the event of an associated infection, antibiotic treatment may be prescribed to control abscesses or infected wounds.\n\nAnti-inflammatories or painkillers may be used to relieve discomfort during the acute phase.\n\nA lasting adjustment of the diet, with an increase in long fibers, is an integral part of the treatment for limit recurrences.\n\nIn severe or recurrent cases, tooth extraction may be considered by a specialized veterinarian.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention is mainly based on a diet rich in long fibers: quality hay permanently available, fibrous plants, bark and branches to gnaw.\n\nThis diet promotes the natural wear of teeth through chewing.\n\nA correct intake of calcium and vitamin D, particularly through sufficient exposure to the sun or a balanced diet, contributes to the strength of the jaw bones.\n\nRegular dental check-ups by a veterinarian, especially in older animals or those that have already had an episode of malocclusion, make it possible to detect a recurrence early.\n\nAvoiding the reproduction of animals carrying a congenital malformation of the jaws also limits the hereditary transmission of the problem.

Possible complications

Untreated malocclusion worsens over time because the teeth continue to grow without wearing down.\n\nTooth prongs can injure the tongue, cheeks or palate, causing painful sores and sometimes local infections or abscesses.\n\nThe animal, hampered in eating, may develop severe weight loss, dehydration and general weakening.\n\nIn very advanced cases, the infection can reach the jaw bone (osteomyelitis) or the dental roots, making the treatment more complex and the prognosis more guarded.

When to see a veterinarian

The capybara has been eating less or more slowly than usual for several days.\nPieces of food fall from its mouth while it eats.\nExcessive salivation or an unusual mouth odor is observed.\nSwelling appears in the muzzle or jaw.\nProgressive weight loss is noted without any other obvious cause.\nThe animal appears despondent, less active, or avoids contact with food.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally favorable if the problem is detected early and treated regularly, especially when the cause is dietary.\n\nThe prognosis is more guarded in cases of severe congenital malformation of the jaws, because the teeth will tend to misalign again after each filing, requiring lifelong follow-up.\n\nIn the event of complications such as deep abscesses or bone damage, the prognosis becomes more uncertain and the treatment longer.
